Northeastern is private, and its EA doesn’t fall under any of the above exceptions. It does have ED, but notification is by December 15, which doesn’t work, and I think it’s not what you’re looking for.
As it happens, two years ago DS applied Early to the two schools you mentioned: Yale and UMichigan.
I’m from California and plan on studying political science or economics. I’m really attracted to Yale’s excellent programs in the social sciences and humanities, as well as its renowned theatre department (I’m a theatre kid) and artsy atmosphere. The residential colleges have also caught my interest.
My ACT is 32 (no study) and I am taking it again in the fall (I have been studying like crazy!) to hopefully get it up to a 33 or 34. I plan on emphasizing my involvement in theatre, my earning of Eagle Scout, and my internship with San Diego’s mayor.
If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them and I am more than happy to offer other suggestions! I think we should use this thread to help each other out!
does anyone know if the admission rates are supposed to increase because of the new colleges? I’m thinking that they want to keep it more selective but it would be pretty hopeful if the increase is true.
admit rate equals admits divided by applicants. The # of admits will increase – but what if a corresponding percentage of applicants also increases? Who’s to know.
@IxnayBob – I think I know my answer but just thought I would seek your (or anyone else’s input).
USC offers an automatic half tuition scholarship to NMF, however, students must apply by Dec 1st in order to be considered for the (automatic) scholarship. The school notifies students in Feb, as outlined below.
Based on what IxnayBob quoted above, I assume that applying to USC would violate the terms of Yale’s SCEA policy?
All first-year applicants who submit a complete application by the December 1 deadline will be considered for USC Merit Scholarships and will receive notification of their status in February. Applicants who are not selected to receive or interview for scholarships will still be considered for regular admission. All first-year applicants who submit a complete application by the January deadline will be mailed an admission decision by April 1. USC does not have an Early Decision or Early Action program. Only notification from the Office of Admission constitutes an offer of admission.
You can still apply to USC by December 1st, because it is a regular decision application. The SCEA rules are for other EA or ED applications. My son applied to both, and also submitted other regular decision apps by early deadlines for scholarship consideration. This is allowed, unless something changes this year.
@CT1417, my quoted text above refers only to early admission programs (EA/ED/SCEA/REA/etc.) and how they conflict or don’t with Yale’s SCEA.
Early application (as opposed to early admission) for scholarship or finaid purposes is fine.
The above is my understanding. I am not a lawyer. I still don’t understand all the details about what is deemed icing and what isn’t in hockey. But, I hope my answers help
Could you guys help me out a bit and tell me what areas I should strengthen to have a shot at Yale? Note that I do know how to play the recorder but no major achievement/interest in it.

@RoundGenius Hi, just saw your major options, and thought I’d drop a comment! If you’re interested in studying poli sci and economics, Yale has a neat major called “Ethics, Politics and Economics” which might fit your bill!
Was wondering whether my daughter’s scores make her reasonably competitive for Yale’s SCEA:
SAT I: 770, 780, 740 (2290) (took test once)
ACT: N/A
SAT II: 800 (Biology - molecular); 780 (English literature)

She has strong EC’s and letters of recommendation. She’s also a legacy.
As someone who is an alum or had a child with an alum, I’m sure that you realize that your D has very good stats. And, as is so often the case, it will come down to essays, LoR, and other factors (eg fit) that are impossible for readers of a forum to know.
@PicoLA Not an expert by any means, but a long time lurker of these boards and I would be excited with these stats for sure! I would say that she has what it takes to get to the gate and be competitive with everyone else. She needs to now focus on her essays (the Yale essays are pretty comprehensive) and weave a compelling story so that the adcoms let her through the gate. Congrats on her achievements and encourage her to apply broadly to many other schools she seeing herself happily attending because the most important thing I’ve learned from these threads is that tippy top schools like Yale have the flexibility to move the bar up or down to fit whatever agenda, objective, motive they seek for the day. Given her legacy status, SCEA is totally the way to go. Good luck and keep us posted!
Hey everyone, I am a student from Morocco and as I was checking the SCEA chart in Yale and the responses in this thread, I wondered if I could still send my application to Yale if I have some EA applications coupled with it ( not rolling admission, not outside the us, and not public schools ).
@soablackwhite, I’m not sure what you mean by “some EA applications coupled with it?” It should be straightforward if your other applications are allowed under Yale’s exceptions to Single Choice Early Action or not. If it’s unclear, perhaps you could be more specific.
