There's a short answer supplement for Yale asking, "Why Yale?" in 500 characters or less.
I wrote up a short response which is COMPLETELY truth. But, after re-reading it, I'm thinking they might think I'm just a fan-girl who wants to go to the big Ivy League for no other reason but that, which isn't true. Do they want a nicely worded response like I gave, or do they just want, "this, this, and this." 500 characters is NOT a lot of room. What do you think? I can make a completely new one if that's the case, it's not a big deal.

It all began when I opened Yale's Admission Viewbook. I'd never even considered going to an Ivy League school after hearing horror stories about how hard it was to get accepted. But when I saw the gorgeous blue book, my fingers couldn't resist flipping through the impressive pages, my eyes couldn't draw themselves away, and my imagination wouldn't seize. I imagined myself inside every building, on every lawn, among every group in the photos. It was love at first sight; I knew Yale was the one.

Is at the end what you wrote? I would be more specific as to what programs and what aspects of yale do you like/love. If I put any other school’s name in there it would be okay to send, which is not okay to use for those “why ____?” essays.

Yes, that is what I wrote. I thought that it seemed too generic as well, although it is the truth. I like that rule of thumb, though. Inserting another school’s name and if it still works, then it’s no good. Thanks!

Don’t forget that your response doesn’t need to be super creative or descriptive, be straightforward, concise, and specific on what you like about Yale.

It comes off as a little superficial. You ONLY like Yale because it looks pretty in picture? I’m sure you know more about Yale than that. Talk about specifics.

You have amazing writing technique, but it doesn’t help convey any deep meaning.

The writing sounds nice, but the content is poor…all you talk about is their pretty pictures. Discuss the academics or something–the reason you want to go Yale cannot be only because they had an attractive brochure!
