How does it differ from the housing systems of other colleges?

You get randomly assigned to one of the 12 colleges the summer before your freshman year and you stay associated with that college for all 4 years. As a freshman, you’ll most likely live on Old Campus (which houses all the freshman) in a building specific to your college. 2 colleges house their own freshmen. Sophomore-Senior year you live in your college unless you go off campus or need to be annexed because there is no room. The colleges each have a dining hall, a library, a gym, and other little perks (like dance studios, butteries for late night snacks, game rooms, press room, etc.) and these vary from college to college. You also do your laundry there.

^But don’t other residential colleges have similar features?

Why don’t you read what the Yale brochure says. It’s pretty informative. Besides that, maybe do a search here on this forum.

Yale’s RC system is extremely different.

If you want to devote some time, may I suggest this?

There are some other colleges with similar systems. Harvard’s Houses are similar, except that students aren’t assigned to them while freshmen. Rice has a similar system, and other colleges have some residential colleges and some traditional dorms.
Yale’s residential colleges are very different from the typical dorms at most colleges.
