Were you an alternate or a finalist?
@hkiss2018 No way!!! That’s awesome, I can’t wait to meet you!
@natalia_bnm I was a finalist - just took a while to find this
@ojinmorocco you too! There’s a yes abroad group on facebook so if you’re interested in meeting other people you know where to find them! I heard there are six of us going to Morocco and it’s all girls.
My daughter got accepted to YES for Bosnia and also CBYX. She chose to sadly decline the CBYX spot. Bosnia was her number one choice, so that was (surprisingly) awesome. I did read that some of the countries do not accept gap year students–only those still enrolled in high school, so that cuts down on the number of spots that one is eligible for if you are a graduating senior and only a few countries will allow graduates. I know that the Balkan countries do take gap year kids.
NSLI-Y has not announced all of their finalists for all year programs yet–they are still waiting for Mandarin (about 25 kids?) and Korean (not sure how many in that program), so that could potentially free up some more spots for alternates with YES. My daughter applied to Mandarin and Russian and got no response for Russian. She is unsure what she will choose if she would get into Mandarin with NSLIY.
I saw just today that a YES alternate was moved up for a spot in Bulgaria, so there is still a chance! Don’t lose hope!
The YES letter said that we would be getting more details about the program after the 20th of March, but we have heard nothing. I don’t know if they are also waiting for the final NSLIY announcements before sending out more details to finalists? This whole thing is very anxiety inducing for moms and kids!
An alternate on Facebook just got upgraded to Bulgaria!
Does anyone know how many alternates are left and/or how many have been upgraded? I told myself that if it didn’t happen by today I should try to move on, but it’s really hard when I’m still hoping to be upgraded.
@natalia_bnm Just call them. It is entirely reasonable to check in about something so significant in terms of your planning.
@natalia_bnm Did they give you any new information?
No. I’m calling it. I would still be thrilled if it happened but I’m just going to move on.
@natalia_bnm I feel exactly the same way.
Ahh I know this thread was from last year, but any advice for Yes Abroad hopefuls?
@RightTwix Apps are due in a few weeks.
I have my interview on Saturday and I was wondering if any of you guys who went through it last year could give me some pointers/tips on what to prepare for, what it is like, and how the interview is structured.
