Yes, Another Chance Thread. Chance 4 Chance (29 ACT)

Hey, a senior at a private (Catholic) High School in Southern California. I'm primarily focusing on business schools that have good undergraduate programs, and I'm also hoping to attend a school under $15,000 a year, ideally under $10,000 (Income is around $40,000). I'm applying for A LOT of financial aid, and possibly a small amount of merit if possible, so all my choices are cost effective. The schools are broken up into most difficult to least difficult, and it's pretty much in order of my preference.

*
-Essays are very good and reflect my passion; They were well written and witty in certain essays.
-Recs are both very good, and I have a great relationship with my counselor who highlighted many of my substantial attributes.
-Single Mother with a brother in college, father passed away.
-Income of <$45,000

-ACT: 29

Tougher Schools

4.) USC
5.) Wake Forest

Notables:
-Very good extracurriculars (not the typical CC stuff...), several programs that are based on my intended career, may play soccer for the school after I apply

Might look at Holy Cross-very good school with nice campus 1 hour from Boston.

Thanks for the reply, but I’m pretty set on my list. I’ve definitely put in the time and done my research, which was considerably easy since I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I want to do in the future. Holy Cross is a good school, but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for.

What do you think my chances are for the list I’ve got?

btw, I know your opinions are merely guesses, and since I’ve already applied to most of them it doesn’t matter too much. I’m just seeing where the public thinks I’m at in this process, and I’ll gladly chance anybody who’s looking for the same.

Emory will be near impossible with your class rank and act. Don’t let that discourage you from applying, but I agree with you that it is a very big reach…

Your ACT is slightly low, but I think you have a good shot for BC. As for Emory, it’s def. gna be a mid reach, but try it. I think your a match for wake forest.
USC is a low reach.

What are your ECs specifically? your “unique” ECs will make you stand out.

Chance me too pls
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1235193-chance-me-nyu-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks guys, yeah I kind of just threw Emory into the mix since it’s a VERY strong business school, may or may not apply. I’m going to try to talk to the soccer coach and see if he can watch me at an upcoming tournament and see if anything can come from it. I’m a realist, and my class rank/act aren’t all they could be, but my essays reflect a bit of an explanation (but I take responsibility) due to the loss of a parent freshman year.

ECs= lifetime of soccer, 100+ service hours, started 2 clubs, 2 internships with respectable companies (1 stock based program, the other was me shadowing a CFO of an accounting firm). My drive is shown in one of my essays, and it made for a great story.

Nothing substantial like 10,000 service hours or working 60 hours a week but it’s definitely enough to prove that there’s more to me than what’s on paper.

I may or may not apply to USC either since I probably won’t be satisfied with the offered aid, Boston College and Richmond are my main 2 schools that I’d love to go to, Wake is somewhere in the top 5.

anybody? chance for chance

Does your Catholic HS have any type of relationship with BC? Is it Jesuit? If so , that might give you a leg up in admissions/ FA. Ask your GC.

Do you really want to go so far from home, tough? Flying back and forth will be a big expense.

I would say try to increase your test scores by December(ACT deadlines are 11/18) or even January. Or possibly, if you can, take the SAT I so that you can show that you have experience in both area of specialties. Try it out. You have a more satisfying score on the SAT’s than the ACT’s.
And for your subject test, if I were you, I would either take chemistry or take another subject test. (Math I maybe? It’s basically the fundaments of math. However, stupid mistakes cost many students a lot of points. Math II is a bit more difficult…)

For your target schools, your notable courses and GPA look really good. However, your rank doesn’t… I don’t think you can really change the rank significantly in senior year. However, do some great EC’s: make clubs, take leadership positions, make fundraisers, etc. For Emory and others, up your resume and stuff. They are possible reaches, according to what you have now. Remember, colleges can be unpredictable.

You’re ACT could be a bit better for you’re reaches.

I’d say you are definitely in USD, probably SLO depending on major. You have a chance at WF and USC (but it may be very expensive) I’d apply to Emory as well.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the outside opinions. Since I’ve already applied to most of these schools EA/REA for BC, I would find out whether I got in or not before the December test date :stuck_out_tongue: SAT II 680 on Chem was a bit disappointing but I included it, took math 2 before I took Precalc (taught myself Alg 2 the summer before) and got a little bit under a 600. Terrible, I know, but I never took it a second time and instead channeled my energy towards the ACT (30 math :S).

Emory is definitely a reach, no arguments there. WF, USD, Syracuse, and SMU are all in my range, both in the literal sense as well as from a financial standpoint. University of Richmond is in between but they offer a lot of aid if I get in, so that’s one of my top choices. The next echelon would be BC, 1st or 2nd choice depending on the aid, great school that seems like a low reach. My counselor thinks I’ll get in, as we spoke with the representative that came to our school and it seemed like he’s aware of the inner workings of the school. I sure hope he’s right. USC and Emory=Big $$(mainly USC)+Reach(both)

bumpppppppppp

The passion you show in the field that you want to pursue will definitely help your case with all these colleges. Your GPA and ACT are decent. I agree with the others, Emory is a reach, but if your essays are good, I think you have a great chance at all the other colleges. Good luck to you!

Chance back please!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1241354-decent-gpa-high-sat-1-weak-ecs.html</a></p>

Wow. Sounds like my intended major and EC’s are nearly identical to yours. You look like you have applied to a very appropriate list of colleges. Your course rigor is helping you quite a bit, but your ACT is holding you back a bit from Emory. If you look, Emory’s bottom 25% falls around a 29, so you could definitely get in. I’m also looking at Emory, and have talked with the soccer coach a bit. Nice guy. You should definitely have him come see you at a tournament if possible, since he can help get you into the college. As for your other schools, you certainly will get in to at least a couple of them. I think you’re pretty much safe. USC and Cal Poly could be good fits for you since they’re in-state. As for business, though, you can’t go wrong with Emory. As a curiosity, what club do you play for? I’m on the east coast, so I’m not really familiar with the clubs in SoCal, but I may have seen you on the field somewhere. If you don’t want to answer, that’s fine. Oh, and chance me over at the Gtown Yale Emory UChicago chances thread. Thanks and good luck.

K i just chanced everybody back, anyone else?
