Hello. New member but have been lurking for awhile. I was wondering if the school calculates yield using the freshman class only or all grades? We have two kids applying and one would be an incoming freshman and the other is apply for 10th grade. I had heard schools only use the incoming frosh class in the calculation? The reason I ask is that our incoming freshman wants to make her first choice known while the other wants options so isn’t interested in proclaiming such…which I agree and I certainly don’t want them to say that if not 100% they would attend. We’d prefer to have them at the same school but it’s ultimately up to them. I’ve read much about how important yield is to these schools.
Thanks for any replies…
Yield = # of students matriculating / # of students accepted. While each school has the data to breakdown further, in almost all cases, they will just report it as a total.
But you’re really asking about yield protection, which is not something any school will broadcast. So some think that there are some schools who will reject a student if they think the student would accept elsewhere anyway. Such tales are generally apocryphal. If a school is the kid’s first choice, then s/he should certainly say so. If it’s not,s/he should not say that it is not or say that s/he will attend if accepted.
Thanks @skieurope. So you are saying they use ALL students/ALL grades matriculating in the calculation?
Unless they state otherwise, yes, all students/all grades who applied that cycle…
