York College of Pennsylvania vs. George Mason University

Hi,

I got a preferred student application letter from York College of Pennsylvania. Before I got the letter I never considered applying there. Now they say that my application fee is waived if I apply. I am considering applying there. However, George Mason University is really close to my home. My mom wants me to stay close to home. But I do not care about that and want to go to a good college. I am interested in doing something in medicine, possibly neuroscience. Which school choice is best for me? Also what is the average gpa that York College accepts?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I can’t compare the two for you, but I have heard really good things about Merit Aid at York if money is a concern.

Average SAT for CR/M (not including writing) is 1090 per their website freshemn profile.

It is my understanding York provides renewable Scholarships for each year PLUS grants on top of Scholarship. To get the grant you must file a FAFSA form. The grants are not guaranteed for 4 years; the Scholarships are guaranteed. Please always verify financial grants/scholar info directly with the school.

York does not have a Neuro Science major, but they do have pre-med, nuclear med. tech and nursing.

I’d advise to apply to more than GMU, so I think after you view the website (there is an interactive tour map) if York looks nice to you to apply there in addition to GMU.

I graduated from york 5 years ago… I loved it there.

As people are becoming increasingly budget-conscious - York is getting increased attention. In prior years, virtually no one from our large public hs in MD applied to York. This past year - 13 did and several are now attending. It is a Barron’s Best Buy - a private college for $23,000 OOS. I have not yet visited - but campus video/photos looks attractive - nice range of majors - students are mostly from PA, MD and NJ. It’s a pretty safe admit for a B student. I’d suggest you at least visit and see what you think.

This link is for their 2009 Freshman Profile - lots of useful statistics,

If you visit their websites, many colleges will waive the application fee.
This is not anti-York, but the in-state tuition at all VA public colleges are great bargains.

hali - you have a great option with George Mason. But, it is worthwhile to visit several schools and compare. George Mason is much larger than York, although many students do not live on campus, meaning the on-campus student body at George Mason is closer in size to that of York. While York is very reasonably priced for OOS - I’m sure George Mason in-state is cheaper. It is in your best interest to apply to more schools than just George Mason. Whether or not York is one of them is up to you and your mother. As Yabeyabe said, I wouldn’t let a waived $35 application fee influence you very much. If you want to stay in Virginia - maybe also have a look at James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, etc.

hali – Between now and next March you are likely to receive quite a few more “preferred student application” letters offering you a fee waiver. This is a marketing ploy that is gaining currency.

As with yabeyabe2 my comments shouldn’t be read to be anti-York. I know of two kids from our local school who have gone there and both were very happy with their choice. If York intrigues you, regardless of the fee waiver, you should go check it out for yourself.

Hi. I’m wondering what you decided. My son is on the same position. He has been excepted to both schools. Both very different in size and feel. I am interested in what York is like on weekends. Is it a big party school? Is there stuff to do if you don’t drink? Do most people go home? ANy input would be helpful. Thanks

Some people party… I never was a partier. used to hang out with friends, shoot pool, work, watch movies, occasionally study, build houses, etc. Many people do go home on weekends… i used to come about once or twice a month-ish… but there are always people who don’t go home and stay on campus. I liked it a lot.

@fendergirl what was your major? I know York focuses on sci and medical sciences, but didn’t know if other majors were worth pursuing there.
