The Harry Potter books are alright. The 6th one is just so... sad.

I was rather disappointed with the sixth HP book, to tell the truth. The fifth one's my favorite.

Orchdorkbando, how was The Sparrow? A very long time ago, I had wanted to read that book, but I never got around to it. And I rarely go to the library.

By the way, I've in the process of rereading The Solitaire Mystery. (I was looking for Through a Glass, Darkly, but it's never in stock anywhere.) It really is wonderful. I love reading Gaarder's books.

Angus, Thongs,... is just SO hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing when I read the books.

Ahh!! I adore Bloomability! ut please don't tell anyone - am still recovering from last summer's lit-snob phase...

Did anyone else find Sophie's World to but somehat condenscending? I've been recommended it twice, still haven't gotten beyond the first few pages.

I didn't find the book condescending, but it wasn't very engaging. It did inspire me to read some of the philosophers mentioned, though.

extremely awesome:
Harry Potter

pretty good:
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
John Grisham books

decent:
Eragon (havent finished eldest yet, i am so busy)

school books i never would have read on my own, yet i liked:
The Scarlet Letter (well we are reading it now)
Sound of Waves

Who reccommends Enders Game to me? It seems popular. i know my brother read it

Oh I have a point to bring up

who liked Life of Pi???

I heard it was good so i read it.
but for some reason, what i read in the foreward made me not like the book.
you see, it said that Martel (or w/e the authors name was) had previously written a book that did not sell well. and i dont know, that little factoid ruined the book (Life of Pi) for me! how weird right. i guess that sentence in the foreward made me subconsciously believe i was reading a book by a not-so-good author.... i dont know
and i might have actually liked the book if it wasnt for that foreward, because teh book was good (even though to be honest i would have preferred a different ending) because the story actually was captivating and interesting,

did anybody else like Life of Pi

I recommend Enders Game!

Kite Runner

Very good book about Afghanistan and about one person's struggle to reconcile the past.

I really couldn't put it down.

It was very descriptive and the narration is very personal.

Good Read.

a clockwork orange. a malenky book (i finished it in one sitting), but very horrorshow read.

the stranger, or anything by camus or sartre.

and, of course, harry potter.

This Side of The Paradise by F.S. Fitzgerald
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
Lust for Life by Irving Stone

PS It is so weird and sad that there are so little posts on this thread!

Plutarch!!

Some of the biographies are really good - even more interesting than the stories that people make up, and they're true!

Jane Eyre -- Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights -- Emily Bronte
Emma -- Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility -- Jane Austen
Their Eyes Were Watching God -- Zora Neale Hurston
Diplomacy -- Henry Kissinger
Brave New World -- Aldous Huxley

Bump Bump Bump

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is my favorite, but The Great Gatsby is the best. Other than that (in no particular order):

Animal Farm
God Bless You Doctor Kevorkian
The Stranger
Candide
Grapes of Wrath
The Awakening
A Doll's House
Night/Dawn
The Bluest Eye (and Sula, though not as good)
Their Eyes Were Watching God
The Metamorphosis
Slaughterhouse Five
The Color Purple
Black Boy
The Mysterious Stranger
The Lorax
Waiting For Godot
Brave New World
To Kill a Mockingbird
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Macbeth
Ginger Pye
Sandra Boynton books

And, unlike most people here, I hate Jane Austen and the Brontes with a fiery passion.

George Orwell - 1984
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smith
Bel Canto - Ann Patchett
Snow Falling on Cedars <3 - David Gusterson

I always forget the good books that I like, but I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. Steinbeck is pretty good too and Catch 22 was a hilarious book. When I just feel like reading a light non-serious book I'll read the shopaholic ones <goes and="" hides="" in="" a="" corner="" from="" embarassment=""></goes>

Liar's Poker + When Genius Failed

i;m sure ive read those 2 books a million times... each

My favorites The Poisonwood Bible. Its long but definitely worth your time.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned "A Tale Of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens yet. With its three-dimensional characters, captivating plot, and absolutely beautiful ending, it would have to be my favorite novel.

I also like the Harry Potter series. At one point I was completely addicted to the books! =)

i hated tale of two cities. the only book i really liked reading in english class was Scarlet letter (reading it now). then again maybe its because my english teacher now is so awesome while the teacher who taught TTC... lets say i didnt care for him much
