Your guide to Sin and Pleasure in Ithaca

how's the underground rave scene?
also, do RAs search dorm rooms? or only if there's anything suspicious?

RAs do tend to have easy access to rooms...

Underground rave scene:
This is Ithaca. Enough said.
Maybe they have underground raves at Risley, but I make an effort to never go there.

RAs can't enter your room unless you are present, and although I don't exactly know what the rules are, I have heard of them doing searches once let in (you can refuse to open the door).

The entire first floor of RobertPurcell used to be a pub called the Thirsty Bear, lol

RAs can and will threaten to call the cops on you...

Of course, who the "cops" are make a big difference.

Campus police are willing to forgive A LOT of minor infractions, (ever used a blue light phone at noon to get a ride from somewhere around plantations to North? I have, lol).

Ithaca's finest are an entirely different story all together.

Campus police aren't always that nice, it depends on the officer you're dealing with. But the RAs are never going to call Ithaca police.

Also if anyone has any other questions feel free to ask. I'm a big fan of this thread.

It all depends on your RA, but everyone I know has a sense of how much there RAs care about different things. I have some friends who have to be really careful, but mine lives far away from my room so I almost never see her, and I would be really surprised if she enforced anything.

I've never really heard of underground raves, unless you count the sig chi rave party a few months ago. I've never met anyone who would really want to go to one.

only heard of one rave in my 2 years here... didn't go- they scare me.

what is the policy about drinking on campus. I hear there are "parties" in dorms, but are they the "fun" kind. Is north campus just a day care center for all of the freshman, and will we be secluded from binge drinking, drug use, and promiscuous sex?

lol. The "parties" do not take place in dorms, RA's WILL bust you for partying, drinking, drugs, beer pong in the dorms. The parties are almost exclusively frat parties, and sometimes house parties (for those who know upperclassmen).

North campus is where every other freshmen is, so it tends to be fun. Whether just chilling, or pre-gaming (which happens a lot), and heading out to a party together, most nights I went out were very fun. A lot depends on how much effort you are willing to put into the "party scene".

And yes, all three of those do occur, to differing degrees.

lol @ tboonepickens.

binge drinking? not many people i know go binge drinking - drinking in moderation's always good, especially if you don't like puking in the bushes/random places on the way back to north from collegetown/west campus.

drug use - do what you want with it. i know plenty of people who are straight-edge, plenty of people who enjoy a toke here or there, and some who are into hard drugs. regardless, you'll find a group of friends who will be accepting of all of your choice/preference for drug usage.

oh promiscuous sex.. someone i know once said this very aptly: "where/when else do you have the chance to be stuck in one place with over 12,000 people of roughly the same age as you?" sex is bound to happen, and in freshman dorms like dickson (which is the largest dorm in the ivy league, i think), you WON'T be able to avoid it (and who would want to?) anyway, i would advise very heavily against floorcest, of course. it gets kind of awkward after you break it off - seeing that person everyday for the rest of your freshman year? not fun.

binge drinking, drug use and promiscuous sex pretty much sums up the freshman experience.

this thread = amazing! LOL MrNova, you just reminded me why I love partying with Russians/in Russia :P

i dont think i've ever heard of a party in the dorms...

it's always been pre-gaming among floor/suite mates...

depending on the RA pre-gaming will be fun or it will be torture...

^drug use, huh?

i know all Ivy Leagues will have hard drugs, but how heavy are drugs at Cornell? is it just weed? or are people into pills, coke, heroin, etc?

on one occassion, i walked into a college party (not at Cornell), and saw people doing lines, pills were being passed around, etc... i really dont mess with that those kinds of parties at all

^yea I agree, I dont really want a social scene fill with a buch of coked out kids.

This thread has single-handedly reinforced Cornell as my number 1 choice, now I have to keep my fingers crossed...

I've seen almost exclusively weed.

There are definitely people who do harder drugs, but they tend to be more...secluded about their drug use.

Most people who do drugs just smoke weed. There's some coke and pill (mostly Adderall) use, but you won't see people blowing lines in the middle of parties... Actually, this isn't entirely true: I once ended up in a room of people doing coke at a certain frat known for its penchant for blow. Generally, hardcore drug use at Cornell is kind of kept on the DL, because people care about their futures and stuff, so you probably won't encounter much of it unless you seek it out.
