Your guide to Sin and Pleasure in Ithaca

Ok, seems like people have enjoyed my posts on booze, substances, partying, and sex etc. So I figure instead of having my pearls of wisdom scattered about, why not condense it all into one easy to use thread. So I'll repost my epic bar post, and I'll add some new ones. If you have any questions about any of these naughty things at Cornell feel free to ask and don't be embarassed, I've seen and done most everything/one.

My credentials: Junior at Cornell, fraternity member, caustic cynic, former fake-ID maker, and party/bar/collegetown socialite. (I'm not trying to show off, I'm just trying to help people have a good time). Oh, and I'm Russian and I've been doing this since I was 12.

Ok I posted this somewhere before but heres a rehash of my guide to Ithaca bars:
First off, I'm not going to bother about any bars downtown or in the commons, these are generally towny bars. Stay away from townies! lol. Thus here are the bars in collegetown in order of distance from campus:

Ruloffs: First bar you see when you come to collegetown. Its got a nice almost Irish pub feel, lots of wood panneling, tables, and booths. Decent beer selection, some afternoon happy hour specials. It gets fairly crowded on good nights. There's music but no dancing really, like I said, more of a pub. They actually have pretty good food there and its a decently classy place to take a girl for dinner as long as its before 9 or so when it goes into bar mode. In terms of carding, they scan, but the bouncers aren't great at spotting fakes that scan or have nothing to scan (jerseys). However, they have been known to confiscate fakes when they do spot it.

Johny O's: On the same block as Ruloffs, across the street. I always joke about how I am not white enough to go to Johny O's. The clientel are very WASPy. Lots of blond chicks with fake tans and preppy guys with popped collar pink shirts. Lots of dancing, they have DJ's there. You'll see alot of people from DG, KKG, Psi U, Sig Pi, etc here. If you're a girl, no problem getting in. If you're a guy, they card pretty strict.

Stellas: On the same street and side as Ruloffs, a little further down is Stellas. Stellas is a classy, chic joint. There is nice dark candle lighting everywhere. The basement has a grotto feel, you'll have to see it to understand. This place has the best and most top shelf liquor. It's also very expensive. This keeps the riff raff out, you'll see more classy artsy people, less drunken yelling dudes. This place has no such thing as well drinks, I was at an open bar here with Tucker Max (the online blogger guy) and the "well" liquor was grey goose, sauza, johny walker, bombay saphire. Carding is mixed, I've heard they are tough, but I have never had a problem getting in. I think the high prices scare alot of people away. Dress nice and look confident. No dancing here, people here are too cool to dance. And you wouldn't wana spill your $20 double of Black Bush whiskey.

The Palms: Perpendicular to the street I just mentioned, this is the seniors hang out. They are by far the strictest carders and will take your ID. Unless you have an insane Cali fake or something, DON'T even try to come here. It is a nice place but I'm not gonna describe it because it may encourage youngins to come and get their IDs taken

Bear lodge: This place is closed down right now, but I hear it's coming back. Basically this was the collegetown sports bar. Very tough carding

Dinos: Same street as Ruloffs and such, but on the next block. This place used to be cool. This year they have new management. All the hot girl bartenders (who couldn't make drinks for sh|t) got replaced with dudes. Sucks. This attracts the cousin of Johny O's WASPs, that is the JAP girls and the North Face Jacket Long Island crew. On Wednesday they have some sort of drink special for girls, something with Hypnotic. On Sunday's they have Trivia night. This place has a dance floor in the back corner. Average drink selection. They vary alot on carding, used to be one of the easiest, but now it's a 50/50. There's one guy who works there, big meat head named Pene. He sucks ass, avoid him.

Dunbars: A block down the hill, parallel to the block above, we have Dunbars. This place, haha. It's a cosy little **** hole. First of all, there is a drink special every day of the week. Thursday is $3 Long Island IceT's, Friday is dollar vodka drinks, Monday and Tuesday is $1 Red Dogs and $1 Bud Selects. Everyday $3 Yeungling 22oz Bombers (my fav). But none of this matters because this place is EMPTY every day of the week...except Wednesday. Wednesday is the infamous Group Therapy. For $6 you get a pitcher of Coors light or something, and a highball glass full of kamikaza shots (or as i like to call it, lemon scented window cleaner and vodka). The idea is you go with a group of 3-4 friends and you take turns buying group therapy. Everyone buys 1 round, and you're all trashed for $6 (plus tip). On Wednesday this place is FULL, difficult to move arround in, everyone who goes out stops by. Also, they have a popcorn machine (the movie theator style) and you can eat all the free popcorn you'd like. They have a jukebox that plays basically classic rock and 80's music (Awsome, I've memorized the tracks by now). When it's not Wednesday, you just have a few alcoholics like me and some guys from AGR, the agriculture frat (think corn fed dumbass farm boys, they have the lowest house GPA on campus, in the low 2's.). This place is the easiest carders. If you can't get into Dunbars, your id REALLY sucks. On wednesday it's packed full of ithaca highschool skanks (mmm). This is why no one goes there any other day of the week, because the 21 year olds have real places to drink. But it's deffinitly the cheapest place to knock a few back and makes for good pregaming for a real bar. The owner, who also works the door, is a nice old man named Pep. I've been going there for 3 years and he asks me to cover the door for him when he has something to do in the back lol.

Chapter House: Another block down the hill. This place is almost not considered Collegetown, just on the border between Cornell and the townies. This is a classic Pub. No dancing. It has alot of grad students and even professors. This place has an AMAZING beer selection. You could probablly have a different beer every week, hell maybe 2 or 3 times a week. You go here to relax and have a few pints with your boys. Getting in can be tough because 18 year old girls and baby faced boys stick out like a sore thumb. This place also has growler service. That means for a few $ you can buy a glass corked container, like a half gallon sized, and pay to get it filled up so you can take it home. Very neato, this is the present you get when you turn 21 and live in collegetown.

I think I've covered all the bars in collegetown. Sorry if I missed anything!

EDIT
I forgot about
The Nines: This place is right next to Dinos. It's a bar but what makes it different is they have live music like every night. This is where all the local bands play their gigs. It's hit or miss, sometimes they've got some pretty decent bands, sometimes they suck. They also have semi famous pizza, it's pretty good. There is something like a dance floor in front of the stage, I see people moshing there sometimes. Beware, they have covers often. They can be a little hard on the carding, but they never confiscate. Little trick: They allow under 21 people there for the music. They often stamp the 21 year olds' hand. If you go in with a 21 year old or someone with a good ID, and you press your hand against theirs right away before it dries, you can sometimes get an ink transfer that is good enough for a tall one!

I very much doubt i'd be able to get into any bar (i definitely look 18)...but i'm assuming yalls frat parties are stocked with alcohol!! i love going to all of asu's frat parties down here, trust me people are crazy and hot here

It's all about confidence man. I managed to get into every bar at least once my freshman year, when I was 18. Even if you look 15 you've got at least a half decent shot at Dunbars.

ya but i work at a bar right now and they laugh at me when i claim im going to try to get into our "easy ID'd" bars...but then again they laugh at me for a variety of things i end up doing...

The guide to purchasing alcohol in Ithaca:
Ok, first off I'm going to start out assuming you are a minor, posses some semblance of identification, and don't have any 21 year old friends yet.
So let's start with beer first, spirits and wine are a whole different ball game.
So, in order of ease of purchase:

Grandmas: This isn't its real name, but it is whate everyone calls it. It's located on the beginning of Eddy St, right next to Dunbars the bar. The real name is something like Collegetown Convience or something. They call it grandma because a sweet old (and most importantly utterly senile and blind) lady runs it and usually works there. This place offers mostly your bottom rung of beer (Warm cases upon cases of anything Milwakee, coors, miller, keystone, natty, etc). It does have one bright side, they sell 40's! And not just Old E, they've got Hurricanes (my personal fav), colt 45's, bud, yeungling, and a bunch more. These are actually cold too. Prices aren't great, but they're not robbery either. Easiest carding ever, as long as its laminated and says your 21, you're fine. Oh, you may want the person in the picture to be the same color skin, but you may still get away with it anyway. Closes at 11pm

Cora's: This is located by the Gun Hill apartments, it's kinda hard to describe how to get there so ask someone in person. You'll need a car as well, this isn't really walking distance. This place is run by an awsome guy named, you guessed it, Kenny Cora. The selection: Towers stacked with the usual cheapo stuff (but you can get it cold from the back freezer at least). Hes got a bunch of cases and 6 packs of some nicer stuff too though. Molson XXX, blue moon, southern tier, hoegarden, Ithaca Beer Company, Sapora, SPARKS (sparks is amazing if you havn't tried it, it tastes like redbull&vodka, and its basically an energy drink with 6% alcohol in a 20oz can. Tastes damn good) some weird german beers I can't spell, magic hat, etc. Decent selection all things considered. Also has 40's of some good beer too. Even has some barley wines. Oh yeah, sells ping pong balls for 0.50 a pop too, for emergency beruit use. I don't know of anyone ever being rejected with a fake from this guy. He's not dumb, he knows whats going on. He even tells me to tell the other people in my frat that the under 21 year olds should only come on Sunday-Thursday when the cops aren't arround. The one catch with all this is the price. He deffinitly overcharges a bit, but I call this the underage drinking tax, it's the price you pay. Closes at 11pm

Jasons: This is a convience store right next to The Nines. They also have beer! A decent selection, probablly equal to Coras. Also they have a slightly better 40's selection. They also sell cups and ping pong balls and ice. The prices are pretty good, better then Coras (1.70 for Hurricanes!!! That's amazing value) However the price is stricter carding. They are still on the easy side, but be warry, I know people getting rejected all the time. Be particularly watchful of who's working the register. Sometimes its local kids/students. Sometimes its an older middle aged guy, a manager or something. Obviously, the older guy is more of a hardass, stay away from him.

University Convience Store (Or Deli?): This is across the street from Dunbars, run by some Pakistanis. Typical convience store, with a freezer in the back. This place has average selection and price, but they card pretty bad. I know people who've gotten their ID's taken here. The one advantage to this place is the hours, I think it's open pretty late. Otherwise, STAY AWAY, not worth it.

Wegmans: This is a grocery store on rt 13. It's kinda far and selection isn't great. But, its CHEAP. They are pretty big bastards about IDs though. Not so much that they're super strict, though they are pretty strict. If you come in with some friends, even if they aren't at the register with you when you pay, they will ask to see your friends IDs! If you go to this place, make sure everyone else stays in the car lol. But in general, I would avoid it.

Finger Lakes Beverage Center: The wholy grail. I've been arround the block a few times, and this is one of the greatest beer store I've ever seen. All they sell is beer. But the selection! INCREDIBLE! You could buy a different beer every day of the week. There is WAAAAAAAY more then 365 types of beer here. Stuff you won't find anywhere else. It's a candy store for adults. They also have stuff in all sizes. They even sell Magnums (1 and 1/2 LITERS) of all sorts of different beers. They also sell 4.95 gallon kegs. Now why is that special? Two years ago they passed a Thompkins County Law basically making it dangerous and expensive to buy/serve kegs to anyone who isn't 21. Kegs have all but disapeared from frat parties at cornell now, sadly. However, for those smart enough, the Ithaca legal deffinition of a keg is any container of 5 or more gallon kegs. See where I'm going? They only sell Labatt in 4.95 gallon sizes for now. They are $30 (a good price for the size, about 0.35 a beer). But for a kegstand? Priceless. Oh yeah, don't go here if you're not 21. Just forget about it. Get a friend who's 21 or wait till you're legal. I've been here 2 or 3 times, but I was stupid/lucky and had a damn good ID. EDIT This is located downtown on State Street, that means you need a car

Sounds like things have really changed since my day, when the drinking age was 18, they served hard liquor in the student union on West Campus, freshman orientation was sponsored by Schlitz, and we didn't need no stinkin' fake IDs.

Wine & Spirites:
I'll start of right now telling you that if your not 21 you're not going to be buying anything yourself. Sorry. Getting a liquor license in this area is insane, and as such they card accoardingly to protect their all important liquor license. These places arent just strict and confiscate often, I know several friends who have bee ARRESTED. One place actually locked their doors with an electronic button, called the cops, and waited for them to come. But, if you're stupid and want to give it a try or have a friend who is 21. Even if you go with a friend, DONT go in the store, give your friend your money and tell him what you want. Here ya go:

College Town Liquor: This place is right across from Dinos. They have a decent selection of liquor, not much wine, and horrid prices. Unless you're in a rush or something, don't shop here. The two times I used my ID here it worked, but i was a young stupid freshman and got lucky, I will never chance it again until im 21.

Triphammer Liquor Store: This place is in the Triphammer strip mall, across from the glorious Pyramid Mall. They have an average selection of wines and liquor, and better prices then College Town liquore. They also have these nifty gift packs. The gift packs cost the same as the regular bottle of liquor, but they come in a nice box and free stuff! For example, the Jager comes with Jager shots, and the B&B comes with these crazy round bottem B&B rocks glasses. I've never actually been inside this place.

Northside Wine and Liquor (Formerly Discount Wine and Beverage): This place is located on rt13, right next to the Taco Bell. They have the largest liquor and wine selection, very impressibe. Also their prices are always the same or cheaper then Triphammer. They have a special deal on wine, if you get a case of wine (ANY 12 bottles, The Large Magnum sized bottles count as 2) you get 20% off on all the wine. I bought from here once and my ID worked, again I was young and didn't know better and would never do it again. This is where a frat brother of mine had the doors electronically shut and the cops came.

Greybeard: Yeah, my fraternity advisor (Class of 71 or 72 I think?) tells me all the time about the good ole days. Back then my fraternity used to rent a "beer truck" and serve on the front lawn, with off duty cops doing security.

keep this lovely thread alive!!!

How's the dating scene....like real dating...not hooking up?

As in guys taking girls out on dates? Non-existent. It's basically relationships or random hook-ups.

Nice to see a fellow Russina in CC. Is there a lot of us up there at Cornell?

Wow, mrnova... It seems either you're quite the Frank Abagnail (the guy in Catch Me If You Can), or have the luck of the devil.

Spanks I disagree. Anecdotaly I've seen plenty of guys take girls out on dates, and I've attempted to as well but yeah, hook ups dominate the scene. Dates are more common after you wake up in someones bed and decide you'd like to take the time to get to know them better.

NJCC: I think there are a decent ammount, there is a pretty large Russian Jewish club. Even though I hang out with alot of Russians at home, for some reason I never got in touch with much of that crowd up at school. Go figure. The few russians i've met and hang out with at school are actually townies.

Heythatslife: I dunno, he forged checks, I only forged IDs and I'm retired :) But yeah, I'd say a bit of luck is involved. But I'm also a somewhat tall and built (6' 195) loud, outgoing, confident Russian who pounds alcohol, so people often think I'm older then I really am, and I've been doing the bar scene regularly since I was 17. It's really all about confidence with fakes, just like with the ladies. Uh, I just had an all nighter in the city (knicks game, several bars I can't remember, some random chicks place, ended up in brooklyn!?!? Wandering by myself in manhattan at 5am, somehow I just got home at 7:30am :/) So yeah I'm tired, extremely broke, and incoherant. Sorry for spelling mistakes, good night (morning?) all.

am i the only one who finds this thread disgusting??? boring?? useless?? pure crap??
sorry for bothering you guys. continue as if nothing happened.

yes, you are.

Haha, good morning mrnova.

Some people are Puritan prudes, while others like to get wasted 24/7. I count myself in between, so I'm thinking it'll probably be useful some time.

mrnova, just curious...are u a guy or a girl

I'm thinking guy, for a number of reasons. Read through his posts and it's pretty clear.
