Your undergraduate degree, school, and possible MBA program acceptance/I-baknking job

I am a engineering major at UC Irvine, and want to go on to get an MBA and pursue Investing Banking?

Although I got into Berkeley, and UCLA, I chose to go to UC Irvine for some reasons

My question is how important is the school you go as far as getting an MBA acceptance and getting an I-banking job? I've heard that my engineering major will help in both? I'm kind of concerned about the school. I have 2 years left.

Please comment (and if anyone has any links as far as schools gone to and which MBA schools accepted/I-banking firms recruit, please post)

Thanks

MBA programs aren’t so picky as to the undergrad school you went to, though if you went to some hodunk liberal arts school in some backwards part of the country you’ll have to prove yourself even more (Irvine is a good school). MBA programs more concern themselves with gpa and work/leadership experience once the degree is earned. It is rather tough to gather leadership experience in traditional engineering roles right out of college, so I would address that concern when you begin looking for work; maybe not even go into engineering?

Definitely concern yourself with where IB recruit, that is a big factor.

You are fine with a UCI degree, just plan that experience correctly and get a good GMAT score (>700).

i’ve heard that big i-banking firms come to name brand schools a lot…i don’t know if they’ll come to uc irvine??

also, how many years experience is enough prior to applying for mba? should it be in engineering or in banking/consulting/etc. work?

You got some good info in the MBA forum, but I’ll add my 2 cents.

IB won’t come to Irvine, I assumed you’d want to join one after your MBA. Prior to your MBA I would look into management consulting or PE/VC firms that are looking for pre-MBA folks. These jobs will be more buy side jobs but will get you good connections to jump to the sell side. The other option would be to try and get a job on the sell side, which while you won’t be targeted is still doable with the right connections, networking, and grades. If you want to end up in IB I wouldn’t go into engineering, though the degree is a good one to get.
