We're moving to a hotel tomorrow, and back to the US next Tuesday (week). Things are quite chaotic here as we pack, clean, plan, and simultaneously try to find a room in Manhattan for S, since Juilliard told us (after we inquired about the fact that the tuition bill for fall did not include room and board) that S did not get a room in the dorm lottery.

With all that's happening, I'm taking a break from worrying and decided to invite you all to S's concert next Friday night. He is performing in Leipzig at the Euro Music Festival, at the Music Conservatory founded by Mendelssohn. He will be performing a piece for natural horn that he composed. I am so excited. I hope you all can come. :)

Love to come just send a couple air line tickets and we will be there with bells on!

Congrats to your son, sounds like he is doing great. And good luck with the room in NYC. That is one reason Julliard et al are not on our short list.

edad -- Office of Residence Life maintains a list of students looking for roommates (none, at the moment, except my S, it seems), and apartments available that are specifically sent in to the office. They make no judgements or warranties or inspections or screenings (insert legal dialogue here).... One person did send us some tips for apartment hunting as well. (He should, since he was the one telling us "don't worry" for 3 months, before he said, "Oops, sorry.")

Juilliard dorm is guaranteed for first years, and lottery after that (based on a number of different factors, or no factors at all, depending on whom you talk with in the office).

Flutemom - I sent you tickets -- hope they get there in time. ;) Skip the bells. One of the other performers would probably complain. I hear you about NYC. And yet, my kid's dream is to make it in NYC, so it seems he'll end up there without a dorm room eventually -- it's just a bit sooner than I'd planned. Every kid is different, and I'm hoping mine is ready for it.

Thanks for all the good wishes, and "spirited" attendees. I haven't gotten to attend many of his performances the past couple years, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I hope they have apartment listings that don't require use of a broker. My daughter moved to NYC last summer after graduation to accept a position and we had to pay a considerable sum to a broker--we are from the midwest and I was NOT familiar with that--very unpleasant. Can you also check to see if Columbia and other schools might have listings and/or students looking for roommates?

Congrats! Quite a accomplishment! You must be very proud!

And good luck on the housing hunt. I read about your dilemma in the Cafe. Wish I could help, but I am useless in the NYC real estate dept, so will just send good wishes...

These things typically work out, although cause undue stress in the interim.....

Binx,
I so wish I could help you as you have been so much help to me!! I take it that your move state-side will not be even remotely in the NYC area? I cringed at your news, my youngest DD wants to go to Julliard for dance and that is my biggest nightmare and as someone else said, a big reason that some colleges have been taken off our short list for our oldest DD. I wish you luck with this and I am sure that as these letters are mailed out your son can find a roomate or two. It's funny, my oldest DD and i were watching a movie the other day and were just talking about how unrealistically nice the city apartments of college students and struggling artists are portrayed. Anyway, I hope it all works out.

Hi all -- Just a note to catch up. We're back in the US now - minus H who still has 2 weeks to go. We're in a hotel with Internet! (Atlanta area). The concert in Leipzig was great. S got 2 curtain calls - the only one of the evening. It was funny afterwards; he didn't have any idea of how it was received. Didn't hear the whooping and hollering in the audience, didn't realize no one else bowed 3 times, had it all tuned out, going through the motions. He was pretty high the rest of the evening. Kept me awake on the 3 hour drive back to our town, reliving it.

Lots of people surrounded him after the concert. And a whole other group surrounding his teacher, who was also quite excited. It was so much fun. My D was so proud, I thought she was going to burst. (Psychologists would say I'm "projecting." :) ) S had a great two weeks studying there.

S still doesn't have housing worked out, but has found a couple of others also looking and willing to be roommates. We have a long to-do list, but we're slowing knocking things off - yesterday we ate at Chick-fil-A, and today we all get haircuts. Next we'll tackle the less important things like housing for S and school enrollment for D.

Congratulations binx! I hope you were able to get a recording of it so he can hear himself afterwards.

Are you moving to Atlanta permanently or is it a stop on the way somewhere else? Let me know if we can share any helpful info about the southeast.
