What sort of money are we talking about? What can your parents afford? In my book, that's one of the first questions that needs to be answered.
What's your home state?
What do you want to major in?
What sort of environment do you see yourself being comfortable in? Large school in a large city? Medium school? Small? Rural? Suburban? Lots of fraternities or none at all?
You don’t need to have all the answers today, but some would be a good start.
Look over on the left side of C.C. …see the “Supermatch” tool? Put your data into it and get some ideas and come back and ask about those schools. You will need to be able to answer the questions that bjkmom asked.
^^^I’d disagree. Money will be a factor for you to consider . $30K and a summer job will not cover the $60K in tuition/room/board/fees at many top private schools – you will need financial aid or merit aid to cover the difference or look into some of your many excellent in-state public options.
With your grades and scores, seems like you’d know this site pretty well by now. I agree that the information you’ve provided is insufficient to yield you any valuable information.
Use the software tools on this site. Then go to your school counselor/library, and check out a couple of college guide books. They give useful “snapshots” of the schools that might help you sort things out. There are thousands of colleges and universities out there. Then plan some college visits. See a big school, a medium and a small. Find out which you prefer.
If you know what you want to study, get a hold of Rugg’s Guide, and find out which schools have the strongest undergraduate academic programs for your intended fields of study.
It is a process, and you have the time to work through it.
try visiting some nearby schools and pick out what you like and what you don’t…then try to find similar schools that share those characteristics. Create a list of 7-15 schools, and go from there. This can be a fun process.
Given your budget and your scores, I’d say the UC’s are probably your best bet. With your stats, Berkeley and UCLA are certainly on the table but might be reaches. UC Irvine and Santa Barbara are probably matches. Merced and Riverside probably safeties. And the Cal States are certainly good, affordable safeties.
Based on your test scores, USC might give you merit - assuming you are a NMF (if your PSAT score is/will be anything like your SAT score, that would certainly be the case, and, as such, you should be good for an automatic 1/2 tuition scholarship at USC. If you’re looking out of state, check out some of the many schools that are generous with merit aid (e.g., Alabama will give you a full ride, as will a number of other OOS public schools and private universities). Also, there are a number of small LACs that offer merit aid. Do a search under “merit aid.” There’s a long thread about merit aid in the Parents’ Forum. With $30K plus summer salary, you are going to need some significant merit as by the time you’re ready to start, you’re looking at a full price of ca. 70K for a private. But you can’t go wrong with the UCs.
