Zero Merit Aid

Received acceptance, but Zero academic merit to first choice school. Private, non-top 50 school. Stats: 1520 SAT, 34 ACT, 4.55 GPA, 3 sport varsity athlete, 4 Honor societies (with leadership roles), clubs, volunteer work, 17 AP Classes. National Merit Commended. No merit? How is that even possible? This school has been known to give 20K to much lower stats.

Looks like you applied and were accepted to Syracuse ED.

Sorry, but there is really no real incentive to award you any merit money or to woo you because the whole purpose of ED is that in exchange for an early decision, if accepted, you will attend. ED essentially says you are committing to them

In addition, Syracuse has no guaranteed scholarships where if you have X SAT/ACT score and Y GPA you wil lget Z in merit money, The few scholarships that they do give are competitive. I am willing to bet money that those scholarships are given in RD to woo the students they want/ need to fill out their class

Did you apply for and are you eligible for need based aid. Another thing about ED, there is an assumption that you have done your financial due diligence (minimally run your family’s numbers through the net price calculator) to see if Syracuse was going to be an financially feasible option for your family

I believe you are correct. They didn’t offer scholarships because they knew they had the student with ED. Awful.

Have you received the financial aid letter yet?
Can you afford to be full pay?
Does your child have backups?
If you can’t afford it, email them and say you expected merit aid due to stats (list them) and cannot afford to send your child at full costs.

Yikes - never assume merit unless the school has guaranteed merit for specific stats (and even then, make sure they don’t unweight the gpa). Do email them to let them know you cannot afford it, if indeed you cannot.
