Does anyone know what kind of driver's license a student must have to rent a zip car on campus and what are the rental costs involved? Thanks.

I would guess a Class C Driver's Licenses (the one that lets you drive a car, as opposed to a motor cycle, but i'm not sure what else)

the rates are: $9.25 per hour or $67 for a day for certain cars, $11.25 per hour, or 78 for a day for other cars (generally the Mini Coopers)

there's also an annual fee of $35, but it's more like a credit to your account. the fee goes towards any car rentals during that first month you paid the annual fee. so as long as you drive that first month, there really isn't an annual fee.

let me know if you have any more questions, I use Zipcar rather frequently.

When I checked this out a couple of years ago for my other son I think I remember we ended up not doing it because there was a requirement that the Zipcar member/driver have proof of insurance with certain minimums. And that is where it did not make sense financially for me. My kids are not carrying their own policies while away at school (since their car is here) so if they want to rent a zipcar, I would have to have them insured. I hope I am wrong about this. In any case, if any of you successfully signs up and can post the lowdown here, it would be appreciated. I know someone is using those Zipcars because every time I have been on campus, the Zipcar parking space is empty.

My daughter uses the zip car's on Vanderbilts campus. She just had a good old fashioned Ohio drivers license. She's under 21 to boot. We rented it for 4 days for her to come home on a long weekend. They are great!

I'm pretty sure insurance is included, and the driver need be only 18 with a drivers' license from any state. I assume the only thing that would not qualify is a learner's permit.

The way it worked when I joined Flexcar (and I assume for people now joining Zipcar) is that if you are between 18-21, you must have your own insurance plan that meets certain minimums of coverage. Regular drivers 21 or older do not need their own policy and are covered by Zipcar during rentals.

I don't think your children necessarily need their own personal policy. I'm listed as an additional driver for my parent's cars because obviously I drive when I'm at home. The coverage offered through that policy seemed to meet Flexcar's requirements.

No there's no additional insurance requirement for Zipcar. It's understood that you are paying for the cost of the car, plus gas & maintenance, as well as insurance. the only thing they check when you apply is your driving record.

also, the typical age to use Zipcar is 21. however, the special USC plan allows for 18 year olds to use Zipcar. there are disadvantages to this though. you can't use any of the other Zipcars around the world (and interesting plus if you study abroad) and there's less of an insurance pay-out should you get into an accident (the specific term is escaping me at the moment)

but yeah, definitely, you do not have to have your own insurance. that's one of the reasons why I'm using Zipcar. it would be too expensive for me right now to have my own car considering i'd have to pay for USC parking, insurance, gas and maintenance, and everything.

I stand corrected. There is no special insurance requirements for the 18-21 drivers. Zipcar's website says student members must:

* Be at least 18 years old
* Have a valid driver's license and have been licensed for at least one year
* Have had NO (0) "incidents" (moving violations PLUS accidents)
* Have had NO major violations in the past three years
* Have had NO alcohol related violations
