This took a crazy amount of discipline and organization.
There was a similar story a few weeks back; a young girl from NC (?) commuted to her internship in NJ to save $ on rent! For sure, it’s crazy!
Charleston to NJ but had a minimal in person schedule.
Friend of my DD was commuting to school in NYC from Portland Maine for about a year. Her mom works for one of airlines and she was flying free. That’s takes a dedication and thinking out of the box
That would be a tough commute on a regular basis.
Looks like airline boarding passes that he is wearing:
Thank God for airline miles.
Not really that unusual, that’s a fairly easy commute. Plenty of people commute for years. But it is kind of stupid, as he should have easily been able to find a crash pad for far cheaper than the flights just to spend the weeknights in. Or made a friend who would loan a couch. I would never spend the money and effort for all those midweek flights, just to get home in time to sleep, when you could rent a hotel room for a few nights or stay in an apartment with plenty of beds for cheap. That’s what airline crews do.
“ Bill commuted between LAX and SFO at least three times a week during the academic calendar year for classes….
On a typical day, he would wake up at 3:30 am and head to the airport for a 6:00 am flight from LAX to SFO. Then, he would take the 8:30 am BART to get to Berkeley. Class started at 10:00 am. After a full day of classes, he would do the commute in reverse and get back home to L.A. around midnight.”
That does sound rugged! Perhaps he did have a crash pad. Or Mon/Wed/Fri class schedule.
Sure hope the flights were on time …a delay and now what ??
The first flight of the morning is more likely to be on time.
But it is interesting that there is no mention of flying into OAK, which is a little less risky for delays and takes less time on the ground to get to the UCB campus.
Yeah, one can’t imagine that he would get in at midnight and leave at 3:30. Even taking classes M, W and F, it wouldn’t make sense to do all that flying to supposedly save money. Stay at a crash pad Mon night until Friday, and then go home for the weekends. Better yet, schedule your classes closer together. Seems like there would be more to this story than saving money, because this most certainly is not the smartest way to save money.
