So I finally got the courage to send in my application! The online portion, with both essays and personal information, was sent on Feb. 15. Last day to submit, but on time nevertheless. However, it took a while for my high school transcripts to process, and I had to send in my letters of recommendation, academic resume and transcripts 5 days late. It will arrive at Hillsdale a week after the "last day to submit applications".

Do you think this will effect my chances? :/

I wish you all the best, but I imagine there are a number of kids at least as qualified as you who beat the deadline by weeks (if not months).

Why did you wait that long? Where’s the “courage” in putting something off to the point where it practically begs for rejection?

From what you’ve told us on this board, you’ve come a long way, but if you think there’s a future for you at Hillsdale College with professors accepting anything five days late (absent getting hit by a bolt of lightning)… you’re dreaming.

Thank you for your honesty. I know. I was so afraid to apply, that I let my fear of likely rejection get the best of me. Especially because of my background and high school grades, etc. So I put it off for weeks. I think that the majority of Hillsdale-type students are incredibly conscientious, and probably beat the deadline by several weeks. I made a foolish decision that might hurt me… but I guess it’s out of my hands now. Fear and stress really tend to cripple me sometimes.
I just wanted some other opinions on the matter, so thanks.

Thank you fencersmother, what an encouragement. I think my essays are strong and my overall application is great, but a late application is pretty tacky. I actually called a Hillsdale admissions counselor on the 16th and asked whether it mattered that my letters and transcripts were a bit late, and she said that it’s probably not a big deal. So, hopefully that information is true.

Thank you for the kind words, I really do appreciate it.

I know for a fact that my letters and transcripts got there about 2 weeks late. Its no big deal.

P.S. Write down what Dale said and put it on your bathroom mirror. If there is an assignment due, you pull an all niter, but get it done and turn it in. ;)

Oh yes, I will definitely take that advice. I’ve already pulled several all-nighters in my college career. It pays to start studying early.
And thank you YAHA for sharing that with me. I am very relieved to hear it. Whew!

Yes, I called Jenny Brewer (is it okay to give names on here?), a very nice admissions counselor, and she said that late applications sometimes get bumped. I told her that the application itself was on time, and the letters were sent later. She said it pretty much will not be a problem at all.

We were on campus for Parents Weekend on Sat and heard Dr. Arnn say that in 2009, Hillsdale apps were up 10%; this year, up another 20%.

W O W.

Audrey, I would lean on the folks with the letters of recs and sending your forms and records. You don’t want to be later than absolutely necessary with them.

Dr. Arnn also said that each year’s new class is stronger than the year before. GPA’s, test scores, EC’s, essays, recs - all matter as this is a very competitive year.

My daughter did the same thing–sent the application on time, but other documents are late. For some reason Hillsdale did not receive her test scores, although they were apparently sent.
We had told our daughters that they can apply to a few colleges, but that they were probably going to go to a community college–then we relented and let them apply to a few more at the last minute. It remains to be seen whether the tardiness will matter.

audreygirl. don’t worry! the deadline only applies for the student submitted aspect of the application. everything else has a couple weeks grace period :)
