is volunteering 100,000 hours at a hospital a good thing for college admission?

Yes. Nothing is excessive these days. You must have 100,000 hours logged just by living in the hospital since birth. Great!

Eh, I don't know, last year my class's valedictorian had a 12.0 out of 4.0 GPA and 150,000 hours of volunteering at a hospital and still got rejected from MIT.

Am I doing the math incorrectly, or did your valedictorian really claim to have logged in over 17 straight years (night and day) of community service?

You're right, senioritis. Something like 17.12 years.

Exactly. That's dedication right there.

That means since this kid was around 1 year old he has been doing volunteer work at a hospital? If i was a admissions office I would sense some ********

Check his birth certificate! He's really 40 years old!

J/K

The admissions probably saw that he was -- and didn't want that.

Wow 150,000 hours and he didn't get in. Test scores-those must have been the issue! I mean they get plenty of applicants with 150,000 hours and perfect test scores. It's getting pretty competitive.

lol I was calculating this also...nobody has that much volunteer work...nobody has worked in a hospital for 11 years (100k hours) by the age of 17...that's ludicrous.

Clearly his math skills kept him out.

I think some people are missing the sarcasm in this thread...

I'm pretty sure that the poster was being sarcastic and poking fun at the ridiculous stats that people throw around on here....

No working 100,000 hours at a hospital is a bad idea. You need time to cure cancer, compete in the olympics, and maintain a 4.0 taking every AP class and a 2400 SAT. 100,000 hours at the hospital will cut into that other time. Besides, every Dick and Jane volunteers 75,000 hours at a hospital. You need to stand out a little more than that.

i think they add the time you were volunteering while you were in your mothers womb so that adds like 20,000 hours for me.

Who in the world could get 100,000 volunteer hours?? That is ridiculous.

I volunteered at the hospital once a week, 3-4 hours every time, for 2 years and only got like 270 hours.

lol i guessed you missed the sarcasm...

"Who in the world could get 100,000 volunteer hours?? That is ridiculous."

Is that a challenge?

I have 100,001. I win.

Goldshadow:
how do you get 12.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale???????
