Teachers at my kids' private school make $32K a year (and can pay a third of that for health insurance), which is technically low income. One of my son's teachers has been driving around with a window that's stuck open because the crank is broken and he cannot afford to fix it. He's an Emory grad, btw. I'm sure $100 would mean a whole heck of a lot to him. And, anyone who's noble enough to teach, is not the kind who would consider giving better grades in exchange for a gift.

If you have any younger siblings, they will have no problems with teachers lollygagging on writing recs!

So Altoids is not a good idea? My teacher eats those things everyday, so that's why I had the idea...

oh in that case then yeah buy him a whole pack! lol!

So.... Northwestern doesn't sell coffee mugs online. :/ Any other college-oriented ideas? (I want them to be small though). The next time I'll be up there will probably be April.

Thanks for your ideas guys!

Buy the teacher a Northwestern keychain or something along those lines. Anything with the logo on it, but probably not an article of clothing.

$50 is a lot of money, but if you go to an expensive prep school, it may not seem like much money to you.

I think the coffee mug is a great idea.

I bought $15 gift cards for the teachers, and gave the counselor chocolate. All of them had thank you cards as well. $100 is way way way out of line.
