I work on avg 25 hrs a week. In total, I have about 1500 hrs of extracurriculars total throughout the whole year; 1200 during the school year. It’s because even though I do on avg of 12.5 (up to 14) hrs of other extracurricular activities a week, my job is flexible enough that I can pop in/out basically whenever. Is this too much of a bizarre circumstance for adcoms to believe? Should I lower 25 hrs down to 20 hrs or less so they don’t automatically deny me?
I don’t have a benchmark for how many hours of extracurricular activities is “a lot,” I just know I’m busy. But I was surprised when I added everything up and it came to about 1200 hrs.
Yes, 1200 during the school year sounds really unlikely. That works out to over 30 hrs per week. That’s as many hours spent in the classroom and almost as many hours as a full time worker.
Ok, thank you for your input. I will put less hours to make it seem like I have a life.
I don’t think it is too bizarre to believe. Maybe note your job flexibility in the “additional information” section of the common app if you are that worried about it.
What may be more helpful is to edit those activities. HS kids tend to think the number of hours is key, but it can be the quality and purpose in what you did.
Thanks everyone for your answers. Sorry I’m thread-sitting, lol.
Re: quality>hours-- a little too late for that. I’m a senior. But I think that is good advice for anyone younger looking at this thread.
