There seems to be several universities that give good merit aid based upon a 1400 SAT score (among other requirements). My D is a rising senior who scored 1390 on her first SAT (2100 total) with no prep. After some tutoring, she took the SAT again in May and unfortunately, had a terrible cold that day. She dropped 10 points in CR, stayed the same in math, and increased W by 10. So her superscore is now 2110, but the CR+M remains at 1390. She is not dead set against taking it again, but would prefer not to. Is it worth it for her to take the SAT again to try to attain the 1400?

Your financial situation and choice of schools are what matter. If you want the scholarship money that a 1400+ nets, then she needs to test again.

If you’re only interested in other schools (schools where a 1400 won’t matter for money or admission), then don’t retest.

10 points can be worth $40k+ at some schools. You ask if it’s worth if for your D…well, is it financially worth it for YOU???

Also, have your D take the ACT…she may do better on that.

You definitely should have her take the test again. While it may not seem like a huge deal at the moment, there is a lot of relief that comes with having a score that you know for sure is good enough. Even when it may seem excessive you are gonna want to give it every shot to improve your standings at other schools.

I would also agree that she should try the ACT as well. For some reason the ACT really isn’t advertised at all by most high schools. I went to a pretty well-off public school in Texas and everyone who was in the top 10% of my class went from taking the SAT to submitting their ACT scores. I only heard of one student that stuck with the SAT and he got a 2350 so that is understandable.

Thanks, Mom2. You’re right, the question is, is it worth it financially to me? We can afford to send her just about anywhere, but she knows that the more we spend on undergrad, the more grad school will cost her. Having a 1400 may give us more options. And we’ve discussed taking a stab at the ACT. We’ll see. Thanks again.

How do you know which schools give merit aid for 1400? Is there a list somewhere or do you have to go through the tedious process of researching every school via their website?

There are merit scholarship threads that list some schools.

Bob Wallace has made a fabulous thread for assured full tuition scholarships for various stats.

Alabama gives a full tuition scholarship for a 1400 M+CR SAT (or ACT 32) and a 3.5 GPA.

Thanks, Jacob.

Update - she retested and got 1410. The benchmark at one OOS public is 1400. She applied, was accepted to the honors program, and is guaranteed at least 1/2 tuition scholarship. Don’t know if she’ll wind up there, but it definitely gives us another very good option. Thanks again to all for your insight.

Congrats!

:)

Thanks for the update - congratulations to your daughter!
