1430 first-time on the SAT

Hi,
So I’m a Canadian high school student (either Grade 11/12 next year, not sure yet), and I’ve decided to give the SAT a shot in Oct. after preparing for it over the summer holidays. I’ve been using the Khan Academy online prep program, in addition to some SAT prep books borrowed from the library that I’ve leafed through. So after 3-4 weeks of this (1h/daily), I took a shot at the first SAT practice test (on paper), and managed to get 1430, with 750 on reading/writing and 680 on math. My brain just sort of fizzled out by the end of the Calculator Math section, which kind of explains the much lower math score. My lowest in the math sections was on Passport to Advanced Math.

Is this a good score to start off from? Can I expect 1500+ if I continue to prepare like this for 2-3 more months? How can I improve some of the math areas I haven’t really covered in school (polynomials,etc)?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Please tag or refer me to anyone that can help.

Can anyone point me towards a book specifically for Passport to Advanced Math for the New Sat?

Use khan academy

I was wondering the same thing. (about covering uncovered math sections) but with the amount of practice you’re doing, I think you can def score 1500+ with extra couple months. :slight_smile:

Yes, you are in good shape to reach your 1500 goal by October. If possible, try to buy a copy of “PWN the SAT” by Mike McClenathan (Amazon.com). He specialized in high scoring Math Students who are trying to push past the 650s. Just make sure to order the version that was published in 2016 because the old version is still listed on Amazon.

I am in a very similar situation!! I took the sat for the first time and got 690 in reading and 760 in math. I am a sophomore, rising to be a junior and i am worried on if i can get 1500+

Khan Academy is more for practice than covering new concepts. I’m confident that I can get 780+ on the Reading/Writing section; but I need more than the repetitive word problem simultaneous equations that Khan Academy keeps throwing at me for the Maths section.
I’m currently using the McGraw-Hill Education Short Course for the New Sat’s math section (which I’ve borrowed from the library), but it’s pretty concise.

Thanks for the recommendation!
Can anyone recommend a method fore preparing for the essay? I have no idea how to go about it yet.

@pizzatom999 I review AP english language because it has the exact same format. I didn’t take AP language yet so I got all of that material online!

@ilikesiracha The AP language has the same format as the SAT Essay? Is this a portion of an AP Test?

@academiccoach Can you link me to the version of that book that conforms to the new SAT?

I guess at this point I really need recommendations for a good SAT math book that teaches the concepts too, instead of just throwing out worksheets.
I’m guessing I’ll probably have to invest in my own copy of a book if I want to improve my math section to being worthy of a 1530~ SAT.

I’ve noticed that the Khan Academy math questions are on the difficult side and are unnecessarily wordy. They’re not really a good representation of real test questions. My suggestion is to study closely the official test questions (in the four official tests). Also, do use the SAT one question per day app. For any questions that you have a bit of trouble getting to the answer or got it wrong, copy it down word by word and write down a thorough solution. Review it before the test. (Trust me on this, helped a lot of students).

Also, try to take practice tests in one go (and time yourself), i.e. without long breaks.

Got 800 in my recent math, wish I had your EBRW score(mine was 710).

I think unlike EBRW, Math is more preparable (work and practice hard!)

Good luck! You’re set to achieve more than 1500!

@Aovnick Thanks for the support. I just got 770 on the R&W section of the second practice test. :smiley:
But the math sections of the four official tests seem to little to actually base a 2.5 month-prep period off of. I’ve gone through some of the McGraw Hill Short Course for the New Sat Math section, but it still seems like too little to significantly improve my score from.
I’m starting to wonder if I can actually aim for a 1530+ score by myself. :frowning:

@pizzatom999 I’ve seen reviews saying that the MGH all in one book is well catered for math. Check if there’s a lot of overlap with your course now. I’ve not done the practices but I have done MGH’s practice tests. They’re not really accurate.

Look at Prepscholar etc. to find some math books. There’s one by Chung or something that is highly recommended.

PWN the SAT was great for the old SAT math. There is a new edition for the new SAT which we have purchased for kid #2. It seems as solid as the previous book, but I will know more after the November test date. The new version is the one with the red cover.

@Aovnick What’s MGH?

@pizzatom999 McGraw-Hill

@Aovnick Ah, I’m using their short course borrowed from the library for now, but it’s too brief for extensive prep.
