Hi,
So I’m a Canadian high school student (either Grade 11/12 next year, not sure yet), and I’ve decided to give the SAT a shot in Oct. after preparing for it over the summer holidays. I’ve been using the Khan Academy online prep program, in addition to some SAT prep books borrowed from the library that I’ve leafed through. So after 3-4 weeks of this (1h/daily), I took a shot at the first SAT practice test (on paper), and managed to get 1430, with 750 on reading/writing and 680 on math. My brain just sort of fizzled out by the end of the Calculator Math section, which kind of explains the much lower math score. My lowest in the math sections was on Passport to Advanced Math.
Is this a good score to start off from, with the intention to make a good uni? Can I expect 1500+ if I continue to prepare like this for 2-3 more months? How can I improve some of the math areas I haven’t really covered in school (polynomials, etc)?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Please tag or refer me to anyone that can help.
How can u not know what grade you’re entering this fall in HS?
Practice tests may not be reflective of real test performance because they’re not taken under pressure.
It’s hard to say how the new SAT is viewed by colleges. The scoring has apparently curved upwards, and the expected scores in the guidebooks need to be revised.
More practice usually results in better scores, but you won’t know if you have peaked until you take more tests to see a trend line.
Good for you for practicing on a full practice test so you are prepared for how tiring it can be. Find a sleep strategy and a good breakfast strategy to improve your stamina in addition to improving your academic preparation.
I am transferring in from another country and they have yet to determine the credits.
I have extensive experience of giving standardized tests, and I don’t suffer greatly from pressure other than that of time (I kept to time limits on the practice test.
I’ll keep practicing reading and writing, as I know all the concepts already. But for Math, especially Passport to Advanced Math, there are concepts I haven’t studied yet in school. How can I cover them w/o a tutor?
I’m setting 780 on reading and writing and 730 on math as final targets. Getting above the 1500 barrier is my real target here.
Can anyone point me towards a book specifically for Passport to Advanced Math for the New Sat?
