1490 SAT Score, is it worth even applying?

I plan on retaking in August, but I just want to see if I should be more worried than usual for SCEA if for some unforeseen circumstances I do worse.

Breakdown was 780 English, 710 math

It costs, what, $50 to apply?
I wouldn’t call you a slam-dunk. But then again, with the Ivies there are no slam-dunks. So apply. But make sure your application list also includes some schools that are safeties and matches. Yale doesn’t fit into either of those two categories for anyone.

The 710 math is at the 25th percentile. I’d work hard to get that up.

@cram545 Yes you should consider retaking the test. The english is very good so you can maybe try to get a perfect score, but you will have to try and increase the math grade to at least 770. But you can do it just now go over what you didnt fully understand before and keep practicing!

Whenever a student says “should I be worried?” I always say “no.” Why worry about getting into a college where you have a 94% chance of being rejected? You need to compile a list of colleges where your grades and test scores put you comfortably above the 50th and ideally above the 75th percentile. Good luck.

@Lindagaf Exactly! And seeing that the number of applicants are increasing every year, it’s more than obvious that the acceptance rate will decrease to less than 6%

Yale superscores, so focus on Math section to get it up to 750+ then you are good on the SAT front at least.

@cram545, I agree that you could work on increasing your SAT Math score. However, I have noticed students with lower score who were accepted during Yale’s SCEA rounds.

Work on your SAT score. But also work exceptionally hard on your personal statement and Yale’s supplemental questions. Let Yale see who you truly are. Make sure the admissions officers can really envision and distinguish you from thousands of applicants.

@whidbeyite2002 this advice will help a lot during the essay writing process, thank you!
