16,000 admitted? What where they thinking?!

Genre…wow that is really surprising?

Look, let’s say UMich rejected a few more people. You can’t assume that they would all declare a life of homeless unemployment. They might go to college somewhere else and still apply for jobs, you know.

Because companies recruit more actively at better colleges. If instead of coming here, those people that were rejected go to WMU, CMU, or EMU, some recruiters may never even go there.

There was a guy that worked upper management at Ford and he said most of the people they hired were from top 5-10 colleges in each department. Very few people were considered outside of these top 5-10 colleges.

^ Okay, I see what you’re saying. Let’s look at that scenario:

The same number x of jobs are still available.

There are now y additional people competing for those x jobs.

You think those y people with weaker stats should have been rejected.

I still don’t see the problem. The proportion of people who get jobs may be lower, but if the y extra admits are actually of lower quality they should be the ones who fail to find employment.

Graduation for entering freshmen is still 4 years away.

lol you guys need to chill.
It’s kinda sad that so many were admitted, but so what? is it going you from excelling, assuming that you will?

theres some funny ■■■ up there about transferring and learning using online resources, lmao.

haha is that why they still haven’t given me a housing assignment yet…

uhoh.

wow, as an alum, totally dissapointed, i get a post card every other week about donating to michigan, maybe if they accepted like 2000 less a year, we wouldn’t have to donate so much.

i may be overthinking this, but seems to me ted spencer has zero faith in michigan’s ability to maintain a high yield, they just over-enroll year after year. I hope they re-think this strategy as they will probably get like 10k more applications from the common app next year, and that will be a nightmare if they don’t aim to underenroll.

i really think they should fire ted spencer. Instead of having a selectivity of about 40% and increase in student quality, they now have to deal with a huge mess. Year after year, he feeds us that same BS about how student quality is going up, as if he didn’t over-enroll by hundreds every year.

kb, I agree. Michigan’s admissions office has failed big time. It should never have accepted more than 13,500. Michigan cannot handle more than 5,500 freshman with its availlable infrastructure and resources. I have no idea what the University is going to do with the extra 1,000 Freshmen. This truly is shameful.

I should make it clear that I do not mind that Michigan accepted 50% of applicants. I never placed any importance on acceptance rate. And you can be sure that the quality of the students admitted was high. The quality of the student body will keep on improving at a healthy pace year after year.

What really bothers me is the size of the freshman class. I never feel comfortable when the entering class exceeds 5,500.

That is shocking! I agree with Alexandre. Michigan cannot handle 6000 freshmen, let alone 7000. And being an RA in the residence halls, I can definitely say its very crowded. The small classrooms of Dennison and Mason were already over-crowded, and now its getting worse. I guess the really need the extra tuition money, as the marginal benefit is greater than the marginal cost per student.

Michigan buses are going to be packed.

^ Thankfully, this increase doesn’t affect graduate students very much. ;)

Perhaps they could make study abroad a requirement? How much capacity did North Quad add?

^Study abroad requirement?

And for those of us who don’t take a foreign language…?

North Quad was actually a net loss, in both the long run and short run. In the short run because they closed Couzens which actually had more rooms and was open to underclassmen. And in the long run because more upperclassmen who would have lived off campus are opting for North Quad which means now more people want housing then the increase in space.

This is actually kind of funny.

if you dont take a foreign language than go to England or Ireland or another English speaking country lol

^I didn’t take English either.

^ he meant you just need to know how to speak english to study abroad in those countries…

^I got it I was just being a jackass. I figured it was appropriate since the idea that a study abroad requirement should be instated is so absurd that it doesn’t seem like it was meant to be taken seriously.
