1600, 3x800, Valedictorian ~ Rejected?

collegeperson - most colleges put no weight on interviews

gypst - actually essays are just as important as letter of recs. essays/letter of recs are the most important factors in an ivy application

You are incorrect, Yalebound. In recent years, Harvard has had over 2.000 applicants annually with 800's on the verbal SAT's over 3,000 with 800's on the Math SAT's, and 3,100 valedictorians, all applying for a class of 1,640 or so.

<a href="http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/04.03/01-admissions.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/04.03/01-admissions.html</a></p>

There are regularly 10-11,000 applicants with 1,400 SAT scores, and amazingly, in some years, nearly 2/3 of the 1,600 scorers nationally apply to Harvard.

"Harvard always has more valedictorians applying than there are spaces in the class.:

I have not seen similar figures reported for Yale.

What exactly is the purpose of your post, NYCfan? "My dad can whup your dad." "Mine is bigger than yours." Grow up, partner.

The "purpose of my post", partner, is to respond to the issues raised by post #39 above.

actually, byerly, i think futa was talking to someone else.

"over 2.000 applicants annually with 800's on the verbal SAT's over 3,000 with 800's on the Math SAT's"

that doesn't necessarily mean that they were 1600 scorers. do you have any stats on students who applied with a combined 1600, byerly?

and off topic, anyone know how to get quotes to show up in that cool boxy "look, i'm a quote" thing? ;) thanks

YEAH!...i always wondered how to do that!

<do you="" have="" any="" stats="" on="" students="" who="" applied="" with="" a="" combined="" 1600,="" byerly?=""></do>

I have a site somewhere asserting that Harvard attracts an eyepopping fraction of the 1,600 scorers, but I can't find it immediately. May be bookmarked on another computer.

The number of 1,600 scorers nationally has grown from around 500 to over 900 in the last few years, with the dumbing down of the SAT test and inflation of scores. Now we are getting a new SAT test, with a new scoring system. The days of "1,600" as the benchmark are numbered, I understand.

Stats show that Harvard has been getting applications from about 30% of the 800 scorers nationally in both Verbal and Math.

I think I recall that the fraction of the 1,600 scorers applying may have been twice that high in some years.
