Should I go to Middlebury and end up with 16K loan or is Colgate the better choice with no loan?

16K per year or total for all 4?

If 16k per year: Colgate. Really, there's not so much of a difference in them I would choose midd for 64k in loans.

However, 16k over 4 years is much better. My loans at one of my schools is actually 2x as much as 16k over 4 years and half as much as 16k per year.

it's 16K over 4 four year, so 4k loan each year..

What should I choose Midd or Colgate?

For 4k a year, go with your gut. That is a realistic number to pay. I really enjoyed both campuses. I'd pick Midd, my kid would pick Colgate. You won't make a wrong choice and congratulations on two wonderful acceptances.

Who has the better graduate school placement?

for 16K over 4 years, the finance is a wash. Pick the one you feel is a better fit. If you haven't visited yet, you should on admit weekends.

And as for grad school placement and the like, don't go down that path. If you were comparing schools like Cal-State LA and UCLA then grad school placement & school rep comes into play. With the 2 you have, both respected and with great programs, your future is going to be determined by what YOU do in college. If the profs are going to give you great recs at one, you'd get them at the other too.

Yeah that's a reasonable amount of loange. Whatever school fits you best.

How much more rural is Middlebury than Colgate?

Not really any IMO. Both are in quaint small towns, with Middlebury's being the more quaint. But at the same time Middlebury is not far at all to Burlington and the U of Vermont. Colgate is a bit longer drive to Syracuse. Both campuses are large and beautiful and well maintained.

Which college have the better social sciences department?

Who cares? That is irrelevant to everything. you aren't getting your PhD, it won't make a lick of a difference.

So at this point it doesn't matter which one I choose...
colgate and middlebury are equal in academics... and what I must do is get a good gpa.. and then look for a strong grad school?

No, I'd say Middlebury has a better reputation. When grad schools look at LACs they look at the overall school, not departments. Overall Midd is better, but not hugely better. But I would visit and pick the one you like more, 16K is seriously nothing in the scope of life once you have a job.

i agree with slipper1234
