17 on ACT Writing? (October) WHAT HAPPENED!?

I scored a 32 on ACT and got a 33 on my English section. I have a 29 combined ELA score (I know a few schools use that instead) but I got a 17 on my ACT writing!? English is my first language and I’m not a terrible writer. I think the problem is the question threw me off entirely and I ended up not giving any specific examples. It told us to consider each point of view or something so I talked about the pros and cons of each point of view (which was obviously a bad idea and I thought that by the end of the essay but it was too late).

I got an 8/12 on the last ACT I took so I’m not completely inept at writing(8 isn’t great but it’s a lot better than the 17 with the new scoring…)

How will this affect my admissions?? Is it going to reflect poorly? Please Help!

Also how should I report this on my common app? I was planning on sending both scores to some schools anyway…

Well considering you got a 8/12 last time… I think that colleges right now are a bit cautious with the new writing since it’s new. I don’t know any specifics but I think they’ll just take your 8/12 score?

Oh god I hope so. I had no idea that writing was coming and it completely threw me off with the wording of the question.

Send the better score, that would be the 8/12.

Supposedly, the writing scores from the Oct. test are insane. Just talked to a college counselor about this. Tons of kids with English scores 32+ getting writing scores in the teens. She was told that the prompt and the grader’s rubric did not line up–the ACT is being flooded by kids asking for a rescore…
