Hello and congrats to those that got into Berkeley!
I will be attending Berkeley this fall and was making a sample schedule.
There are so many courses that I want to take, and right now I have a total of 18 units.
I have five courses:
Econ 1
Chinese 1A
Math 16B
Stat 20
UCBA 10
I thought Chinese 1A (Elementary Chinese) would be an easy course for me because I have been learning Chinese for three years now. Does anyone know how easy this course is? Btw, I am not Chinese.
Is this doable?
Thanks in advance
It’s doable. UGBA 10 is practically a joke class according to my flatmates, Chinese 1A shouldn’t be hard for someone already learning for three years.
IMO it’s not advisable. Your first semester should be used to get your bearings, join a lot of clubs that interest you and then narrow down what you like, have a social life, etc. All these things take time. You are at your most vulnerable that first semester, if you get buried under the weight of too much work the stress may get the better of you. Nothing at Cal is easy. Take 14 units and get comfortable, then you’ll be best prepared to know what size load to take in the spring.
http://ealc.berkeley.edu/programs/undergraduate/placement-exams has the recommended placement exam you should try before registering for a Chinese language course if you already know some Chinese language.
Amen, @Capecodder2014 - this is a very aggressive schedule for your first semester. You will have lectures, and discussions related to those lectures. You may also wind up in scheduled study groups if necessary - all of this takes up an enormous amount of time. And, BTW, Cal language classes are notoriously difficult, even if you took several years of it in high school.
Give yourself time to get used to being a college student, navigating the campus and the environs, joining a club or two, etc. It will be a huge adjustment, especially if you are living on campus and dealing with being away from home, roommates, etc. You think you know what it will be like: you don’t. This site is littered with high-achievers who went into their freshman year with an overly full schedule (or even normally loaded), only to get slapped down with less than optimal grades and feelings of failure.
D took 14.5 units in the fall, got the first B of her life; 16.5 units in the spring, and got all A’s. 2 more units, but a lot more “life” knowledge under her belt. Slow your roll - it’s Cal.
You will not be allowed to take Chinese 1 if you’ve taken Chinese before. You should drop one of your math classes - two of them would be too much for your first term.
