Chinese 1AX?? Too Hard?

Hi, incoming freshman in CoE. I already have signed up for 17 units

Math 53
CS 61A
Physics 7A
a lower division humanities
a decal

I'm interested in starting to learn Chinese again..do you think adding Chinese 1AX first semester will be too challenging? Will i have a social life if i do?

Unfortunately Chinese classes have been restricted to Letters and Science students due to budget cuts.

East Asian Languages and Cultures

A 20 unit courseload would be really hard to manage 1st semester. Chinese may have lots of A grades, but it doesn't come without working hard. If you still really want to take Chinese you can take summer classes, which are open to students from all colleges.

Actually, I have spoken with Jan Johnson, who is handles enrollment in the East Asian Language courses, and she reported that the budget situation is looking a lot better now. In fact, she said that the restrictions would be eased if not completely gone. And she also said that she never took non-L+S students off the waitlists in the first place. So as of right now, non-L+S still stand as equal a chance of getting in as L+S students.

And I'd say Chinese 1AX and 1BX are pretty easy and don't have that big of a workload compared to other language classes. It's mainly due to the teachers who usually teach Chinese 1X series. They are rather lax and easygoing. You'll find a significant difference if you end up continuing to Chinese 10X series.

That being said, I still don't recommend you adding Chinese onto the schedule you already have. You got three pretty tough techs, with plenty of labs, projects, quizzes, problem sets between them. I'd say either choose from the breadth or Chinese as your fourth class. But ya never know... try it out early on and you can always drop within the first few weeks or maybe change something to P/NP. Maybe you've studied the techs before and they won't be that tough for you.
