Well, I got a 1980 on my first practice SAT. Is there any hope of getting into MIT or Caltech?

Also, could you post your first practice test scores vs. your real SAT scores? Thanks.

I think it depends on the break down of your score..
If your Math score was an 800, and both your CR and Writing scores were 590, then yes, you might have a shot at MIT or Caltech.
But even so, highly competitive colleges such as MIT or Caltech would probably be alarmed by the discrepancy in your scores.
If your Math is 780+, you can try to bring up your CR and Writing scores to 650+, and then you will have a much higher chance.
However, it all depends on your transcript (this is the most important!!), ECs, and recs..

700M/630CR/650W

I go to Phillips Academy, Andover, and I have a near perfect GPA with 2 APs. Next year I will have a pretty big courseload.

EC's-
Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track
Member of Math Club, Science Club, Andover Astronomy Society
Co-founder and co-president of Mock Trial
Probably will participate in summer program such as SSP, NASASharp, RSI

I can definetly get good rec's (my calc teacher said I was one his best students in his 11 years at the school)

My SAT IIs-
Math IIC-800
Chem-800

Anything else?

Hmm.. If you have a near perfect GPA at Phillips Academy, then your SAT scores could definitely go up on your next try.
I'd say that your transcript and SAT II scores are definitely strong, and you have solid ECs.
Do you consider entering into any science related competitions?
That would give you an edge.
Also, if your into to Engineering, what about looking at universities with good engineering programs such as Carnegie Mellon, Case Western, Northwestern or Johns Hopkins?

It's a practice test so why are you so panic stricken?

Or are you just trolling?

I did say it was a practice test in this thread, too. Look at my first post. "I got a 1980 on my first practice SAT." Sorry if my wording was unclear.

About the science competitions, I did win the School Science Bowl (I know that doesn't count for much). Also, the Science Club participates in competitions like that, although I didn't go last year. Do you know of any good competitions I could enter? I have heard of the Intel one, but that's for seniors only.

Sorry, I totally missed the "practice" part.. lol
Any ways, then you shouldn't be freaking out at all;)
You still have plenty of time until the real one, so just do some practice tests and you'll be fine.
As for science competitions, what about the U.S. and International math and science olympiad programs?
I'm not a math/science person myself, so I don't know about this in depth but I'm sure that they have one for math, chemistry, and physics.
