1984 vs. Wuthering Heights

sorry i just need to express my hatred for wuthering heights. maybe it’s because i read it in 8th grade, but i seriously could not stand any of the characters in it. i just read 1984, and while i do think orwell’s stuff gets repetitive after a while, it’s definitely the better choice. jus’ sayin’. (not that it matters anymore since the OP’s already decided)

and yes to ^, brave new world is amazing. i’m going to get off CC and go finish it now. (:

The ending is the best I’m so jealous of you, reading it for the first time.

Back on topic:

Animal Farm is good as a light-hearted explanation of European politics. Also, it’s good at describing the differences between Marxism/Leninism, (how the farm was founded) Trotskyism (snowball) and Stalinism. (napoleon) There’s more to it but it’s really complicated and Animal Farm is good at giving you the basics.

1984 is meh. I never really found it believable that no one would overthrow the government, that there was a “perfect” system of totalitarianism. It read too much like a conspiracy blog, he’s one step away from using the word “sheeple” and it’s just too sociopathic and dark.

^explosions in the sky are playing on june 30th in central park, in case you were interseted in seeing them/live in the area

Wuthering Heights is basically a twisted, romance drama (that sucks) in slightly archaic language. Absolutely horrible book.

1984, on the other hand, was a wonderful read. Thought-provoking, but not dull.

"I suggest Wuthering Heights.

JUST KIDDING."

LOL, i’ve never read it, & i don’t think i will any time soon ;)

anyhoo,

1984 > Animal Farm > Brave New World

read A.F. as a freshman, & the other 2 this year [junior].
B.N.W. really wasn’t for me. i just…stopped caring.
1984 is genius.
A.F. is okay. it was cool for me to read as a freshman, as far as i can remember.

THANK YOU Baelor! I personally really liked Wuthering Heights… sorry? Lolol.

Brave New World is definitely more relevant than 1984 (and a fortiori Animal Farm).

Totalitarian-style social control based on pain and fear is inevitably weak because people will try to rise up as soon as the threat of pain is diminished. Command economies don’t give people what they want (or at least think they want), so they’ll want to get rid of it. The Soviet Union is dead. China is communist in name only. Being an Orwellian today is beating a dead horse.

On the other hand, Brave New World is much more relevant to our society. Capitalism creates false desires through advertising. Psychological research is applied to how to influence people’s desires. Few people want to give up these material pleasures. Yet it leads to people living mindless lives with the illusion of freedom.

Anyway, don’t know much about Wuthering Heights, but there seems to be a Huxley v. Orwell discussion going on.

orgy-porgys & group sex among toddlers are hardly relevant & the strangeness of Lenina’s character was borderline creepy. i liked the new-speak & group-thought aspects of 1984.

i’m so tired. maybe i’ll do a more detailed analysis at some other time, lol.

Brave New World is absolutely wonderful. Excellent. For a lighter commentary on society, one might try Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut, which manages to be irreverant and hilarious at the same time.

Anyone who thinks that Wuthering Heights is a only love story obviously didn’t get the subtext. It’s all about the struggle between the self and other, civilization and primitiveness, etc. Unbelievably well-written book that seriously can never be fully explored. Bronte is genius.

anything remotely brushes on the theme of incest is instant win

1984>Wuthering Heights

foshoo

1984 disturbed me to the extreme. Read it.

Want a happy book? Alice in Wonderland! One of my all time favorites.

1984, simply because I haven’t read Wuthering Heights yet gasp

Wuthering Heights is overrated. I haven’t read 1984 yet. I now finally have something to do!

Woha, am I the only one who is in love with Wuthering Heights? Ironically, it is tied with 1984 as my favorite book (leaning towards WH though :))

awww I love both of them!

Make it a random selection somehow :)

1984, fosho
