Under the subject of social life, we read in a brochure that the 19th Street district is just a short walk away. DD loves this school and is applying, but is a little down about what might be available off-campus without a car. We didn't stumble across this area on our campus visit -- can anyone tell me specifically what is there that might be of interest to students? (I saw a Walgreen's on google maps -- is there a small movie theater, coffee shops, ice cream, etc.?) Do Muhlenberg students actually hang out there?

I can’t speak about 19th Street specifically but I believe it has a theater and also some dance clubs for those under 21 years of age. I can speak to social life outside of the classroom. I have a son who is a sophmore and without a car. There is a shuttle bus that runs from campus on a regular route to stores, malls, movie theaters and restaurants. They also do a very good job of bringing in entertainment of all types onto campus. From lectures to concerts to comedians to lectures and recitals there are a lot of activities for those students who don’t have cars to take part in. There is also a very large theater and music scene on campus. The campus music groups are amazing as are the many theater productions. Tell your daughter not to worry there is lots to do without a car. Best of luck.

thanks, beenthereanddone. I’m glad it sounds like your son is feeling busy and happy. I know they mentioned bringing things in, and we did hear about the shuttle, but our guide made it sound more oriented toward ‘useful’ than ‘fun.’ She has the perspective of being from an inner suburb in a large metro area. During study halls and after school, she has the option to walk just a few blocks from high school to any number of coffee shops, fun retail, parks, movie theater, etc.

The Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market (big indoor historic market) is just a couple blocks from campus. And while downtown Allentown has gone through a tough time in recent years, there are several great restaurants there with a new arena, major office buildings and restaurants all going up in next year (this is a different area than the West End Theater District which is essentially adjacent to campus)

From reading past threads and talking to one alum, I know that ‘what to do in Allentown’ concern isn’t my daughter’s alone, so I’ve been continuing to look around. I came across this resource. It is not current, but I still thought it might be of some use to families considering Muhlenberg:

Downtown, Sangria is nice as are Cosmopolitan, Fegley’s Brewworks and the classic Bayleaf. Near Muhlenberg upscale choices include Grille 3501 and Pistachio plus the full complement of ubiquitous chain places. Lots of little ethnic places all around.
