This board is pretty quiet so I thought I would share my d's comments to me after being a Rhodes student for 11 days.

We are from New England and coming to Rhodes felt very risky for d. She chose Rhodes because she thought they would stretch her the most. Her second choice felt like a "perfect fit", too perfect, and she was concerned she would be surrounding herself with people just like her.

Orientation in June was very successful for her, thankfully because it could have been a very long summer! She made a few connections with kids and they kept in touch all summer. She met with an advisor and she feels she got good advice about classes for 1st semester. The students seemed very open and friendly.

She moved in on August 15th and was immediately excited. She let Rhodes pick out her roommate and they seem to have done a very good job. They listened to her preferences for socializing, sleep, etc... and she and her roommate have remarkably similar temperaments. Its only been a week but so far so good!

She is very excited about each of her classes, particularly Search.

She has already met with her advisor 4 times and has discussed internships and planning courses to accommodate study abroad. There is going to be a career services meeting for Freshman the day before classes start the second semester that she is looking forward to.

She participated in Memphis Community Service Day this weekend (thru Rhodes) and met another group of people and loved getting out in the city.

D posts to Facebook very infrequently but her last post is a pic of the campus with the caption "I can't believe I get to live here for the next 4 years. I love it!!!"

Obviously too soon to tell but we are happy she is off to a great start. I'll give another update later in the semester.

What a wonderful report, and what an appreciative daughter you have. She chose well–Rhodes is a great school.

Glad to hear this report. We just visited Rhodes today (me and my son who is a rising HS senior). I really liked it and so did he.

My question (and I think another thread in this forum addresses it) is about internships. They plug the school as being a LAC in an urban setting. I’m not sure how vibrant the Memphis economy is as a jobs center. Do most kids find jobs through family connections or through the school?

Classof2015 - my daughter just started so I will share our experience so far.

At the admitted student day in April we were impressed that they had an executive from Federal Express speak at length about opportunities to intern both here and abroad with their company. An exec from St. Jude’s Hospital also spoke about many opportunities, including a summer cancer research program for premed students.

My d hasn’t applied for anything yet so we don’t know how many students Rhodes is able to place and/or how competitive these internships may or may not be. We have also been informed of internships with the mayor of Memphis and the state congressman, the Brooks Museum, Memphis Zoo and other places. The college seems committed to assisting students with opportunities.

D hopes to get good info at the freshman career services meeting in January because she would like to set up something for this summer back up north. I take it as a positive sign that she is already talking with her advisor about this but she will also be looking for opportunities on her own over winter break.

Good luck to your son!

love2trvl – thanks for the info and good wishes! I bet we saw your daughter (a beautiful, confident young woman) cross our paths as we toured :)

That is good news that the Memphis community is so supportive of internships for Rhodes students. This school is definitely on the list for S’14.

Thanks again.

Shoot me a PM if you want to know more. I graduated from Rhodes in 2011.
