2 Languages in one year?

I was thinking about taking two language in my first year: japanese as part of my advising class and french that I have taken for 3 years in high school. Is this a good idea? Could this fit in my schedule? How hard would it be to learn two totally different and complex languages at the same time? Thanks.

I think it sounds perfectly reasonable and definitely doable. My friend is double majoring in latin and greek (this is her first major) and german. Plus, she started french last semester. So, she takes latin, greek, german, and french and she loves it!

O__O that’s pretty hardcore.

taking more than one language is not uncommon. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re planning on taking a higher level french class with Japanese, it’s a pretty heavy workload. But the fact that japanese will be your advising class should help. The Japanese professors here are really, really nice and understanding, but they also expect a lot out of you.

if i’m exempt from part I (basic language requirement, placement into spanish 4) with AP credit, how many more semesters of language would I have to take?

Strictly speaking: none. You still have to finish the language requirement, but those courses could be classes in English that deal with a particular area of the world, if you were not looking to pursue further language study.

If you’d like to keep going with Spanish (or start a new language), you would need three more semesters of language proficiency.
