two languages

i have a question for current students. how difficult is it to take 2 foreign languages at a time, or is it impossible? thanks.

Not impossible, nor is it especially difficult, depending on how far you plan to go with it and what you already know when you get here.

I plan to study more than one language in college, but I'm not sure I'll want to take them at the same time (they won't be related to my major, though).

Harvard's language classes, especially the intro ones are very demanding. All of the intro classes meet 5 days per week for both semesters. Don't overwhelm yourself right away. Keep an open mind and try it out during shopping period, maybe talk to the professors about it, and see what you think. You want your freshman year to be enjoyable and you don't want to be overwhelmed.

thanks for all of your responses, it helped a lot.

Well, it really depends on you, re: making frosh year enjoyable and avoiding being overwhelmed.

I have a good friend here who was already fluent in french and spanish when she came here, then continued spanish first semester and picked up both a year-long intro german course and an intensive italian course second semester. (Intensive is where you combine the two semesters of intro course into one semester--VERY difficult, but then again, she already knew french and spanish.)

Personally, I continued french studies freshman year, and will do so until I graduate. But also picking up intensive german or spanish next year -- have yet to decide.

It all depends on you, really, and the languages you're taking. Knowing spanish when you come here and picking up another romance language is NOT the same as picking up languages like russian, german, urdu, igbo, arabic, etc.
