I’m all for using elective to pursue interests/take a break from academic classes. My D took orchestra as her elective throughout HS. She loved playing violin and the conductor/teacher kept things low key. In a very high-pressure HS orchestra was her “calm in the storm” – a place to relax, connect with others, and enjoy making music. I would not have had her trade orchestra for one more academic class – even one that might “help her in college”. (FWIW she played violin in her college orchestra for all 4 years for the exact same reason).
