I’ve only taken up to Spanish II, and then due to schedule conflicts I won’t be able to take any more Spanish. I am taking 5 math classes total, however, and am taking AP Calculus and Statistics this year (senior). It’s pretty much impossible to change my schedule at this point; will I be fine/is there anything I should do?
You should be fine, especially since you’re taking so many maths and APs. Although colleges do look at languages and want to see that you have two -three years of it, unless you plan on majoring in Spanish, you should be fine.
Some more information:
-I am planning to major in computer science/engineering/business
-Currently looking at Berkeley as top choice
Does Berkeley indicate that they want/highly encourage a third year? I know some schools who are fine with two and some who really prefer three.
It’s “recommended”, which I’m assuming means that its okay not to take a 3rd year if your schedule is otherwise strong. I’m just a bit scared because I’ve heard that not having a 3rd year can be very impactful.
Is there anyway you can take Spanish 3 online? I heard Spanish online isn’t too hard.
The only way to conveniently take an online course would be to pay $300+ for a virtual school or something, which I can’t really afford. Some community colleges offer them, but I would have to deliver a special form in person because I am a high-schooler, and the only offering colleges are more than an hour away.
There’s not public virtual school you can use? Or even a county virtual school? I’m just asking because I’m from flordia and we have the option of the virtual school our county offers or florida VS which is state wide and free for any public school student in the state.
UCs “recommend” third year foreign language, although second year is the minimum for eligibility.
Note that UCs also have foreign language graduation requirements for most majors. Completing of the third year in high school (or equivalent otherwise, such as a college course) may allow completing such foreign language graduation requirements in fewer courses in college.
@itsintheprocess nope, none that I know of for California unfortunately.
What schedule conflict keeps you from taking Spanish 3?
If it is AP Statistics, be aware that it is not useful for subject credit at UCB for L&S CS, EECS, any other engineering major, or business.
I would have to drop Statistics or AP psychology. Monday is the 3rd day of school so I could theoretically switch classes, however my counselor had informed me that they’re not supposed to switch classes after school starts to discourage kids from “shopping around”. If given the choice, I would drop AP psychology most likely.
I believe Spanish 3 would be more useful for UC applications than either AP Psych or AP Stats (since you are taking one of the AP Calc classes).
Out of Spanish 3, AP psychology, and AP statistics, AP statistics is probably the least useful course for your college plans.
For CS or engineering majors, if you need statistics, a calculus-based statistics course (possibly specific to the major) will be required. For UCB business, the prerequisites include a statistics course with a calculus prerequisite, and AP statistics is not accepted.
I am pretty sure @ucbalumnus is right in that you will have an FL requirement in college if you don’t come in w Spanish 3. Spanish 3 waives it. I have a D18 in a similar position and the plan would be to find an online Spanish 3 and knock it out post admission. I asked UC admissions and they shared Spanish 3 could be completed up until the time you start at your UC so you would likely have some summer time as well to complete it.
