20-25% rise in applications at UNC

So I haven't seen an official posting of this information but it appears that the applications to UNC increased by roughly 20-25% from last year. Judging from what I've seen from preliminary figures from a handful of other elite universities, this is among the largest percentage rise in applications for this year among US universities (c.f. nytimes). Last year, the OOS acceptance rate was 18% but I wouldn't be surprised if that fell sharply this admissions cycle.

I'm posting the numbers below.

Last year (2011) statistics:

FALL 2011 FIRST-YEAR ADMISSIONS
23,753 applied

Tentative 2012 Applications:

"The most important thing to remember is: it's not you, it's us. We have so many talented applicants--over 29,000 this year--and only space for 4,000 in our first-year class. We have to deny so many students who could do great things here."

(29000-23,753)/23,753
= 5,427/23,753
= 22.1%

If true, I'm guessing the Common App did have a contributing effect. Though UNC has not provided information about the number of IS vs. OOS applications...

The admissions for UNC are state mandated and the figures stay the same. Out of state acceptance will not go up.

And officially verified:

@Heelyes: I wasn’t suggesting that the out of state cap (~18.2%) would be changed. I was saying that the acceptance rate for OOS and IS applicants would go down. Both numbers (OOS acceptance and OOS cap) are near 18% so I can see why that could be confusing. UNC’s first year class will be around 18-19% OOS. I’m not saying anything about that.

But I’m guessing that the acceptance rate for OOS will fall to about 15% or below making it a lot harder to be admitted OOS than in previous years. There are a limited number of spaces for OOS but with more applicants, it will become increasingly competitive.
