Does anyone have any idea what UNC's admit rate is for OOS students? I've heard some people say it's on par with the ivies, but have trouble believing that considering it's a state university.

The admit rate for OOS students has been in the 20% range for the past few years.

I think it’s 18% for OOS applicants, making it very hard to get into.

A low acceptance rate shouldn’t discourage you from applying, and ~18% is almost twice as high as most Ivy’s.

They can only take 18% of their freshman class from OOS. This is not the same thing as saying there is an 18% acceptance rate for OOS applicants.

Thanks- very helpful. I’ve already sent in my app, but out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea what percent of applicants to UNC come from out of state?

You are correct that the admit rate is not the same thing as the percentage of OOS students. However, the two percentages (even though determined differently) have remained close, at least for the past few years.

The admit rate for OOS based on published numbers has consistently been a little below 20%. For instance, in 2006 there were 10,898 OOS applicants. Of that number 2175 (or 19.96%) were offered admission, and 706 enrolled. Those 706 OOS students comprised roughly 18% of the freshman class.

SophieGermain,

Over the past few years, 55-60% of the total applicant pool has consisted of OOS applicants.

Thank you for the facts, tyr. I find that too often on these forums people post misinformation, which is of no help and often harmful. I appreciate your clear and factual response.
