20 Year-Old College Credits and GPA Transferable?

Hi, all. First post here. :)

I attended a State University (in another state) about 20 years ago and did quite well for two semesters. After that, I kind of lost my way and failed four classes. I should have withdrawn, but just wasn't in the right frame of mind to care about a college career. I left there with a GPA in the low 2's because of those failing grades.

I'm now attending a CC with the hopes of getting into an RN program, but they're very difficult to get into here is SouthCal, so I'm working hard and pulled straight As this semester. I went to see a counselor about waving some of my prerequisites for core classes as I had taken them 20 years ago. I got a few entry-level classes waved, which is great, but the counselor told me that I had to report my prior college education, all of it including the failed classes, and that my previous cumulative GPA would be transferred and used to calculate my current GPA. I was thinking that only the grades for the classes accepted for transfer credit would count toward my current GPA. I have a 3.75 GPA currently without my old college grades and would really rather keep it that way, even if it means that I have to retake a few courses that I took 20 years ago.

Any advice? Is this accurate? Is there anything I can do to avoid those old classes following me around? Thanks for reading!

Your counselor gave you good information. Whenever you apply to a college they will require you to send transcripts to all previous colleges. They check for past enrollments here:

If RN programs let you practice grade replacement, then retake the classes.

Thanks very much!
