thank you.

This may have already been answered but I couldn't find it through searching.

I'm doing the common app and am writing the additional Hopkins essays. However, I was wondering if we do choose to write the optional essays is it either the money in pocket essay or favorite class or are we supposed to do both.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You are supposed to do both!

For Admissions Daniel: can you offer an explanation as to why, when I called your admissions office for some guidance on this essay issue, I was told my child should not be concerned with the JHU essays? If you say DO THE ESSAYS, then I would think I should have been told that.

Unfortunately I can not offer an explanation. What I can say is that in all of our literature, including our web site, our application instructions, and the common application supplement, we state our preference for students submitting the essays. As well, during information sessions on-campus and off-campus the Admissions staff recommends students complete the JHU essays.

I am not in charge of the staff who answers our phones, nor can I control what they say. I do know that the Admissions message that is sent through our application and web, states that the JHU essays are recommended.

Finally, as I've said before, a student is not automatically denied by not submitting these essays. It is a preference of the Admissions committee to see answers to these essays, but it is not a formal requirement just a recommendation.

AdmissionsDaniel: Quick question...

I was working on sending the JHU essays in addition to the common app essay while I was out of the country for the holidays. While there, my dad sent in the Supplement before I got my JHU essays on the form. With all the travel time back home, and since I couldn't send in those essays through the Web, the fastest I can send in the essays is tomorrow. Is this too late?

Thank you!

You may add to your application. You will need to postmark these materials no later than January 16. You may also fax the essays to 410-516-6025. Make sure to include your full name, birth date, and high school.

Hi Daniel,
Sorry to bother you about this... it's really rather due to my total stupidity. I think I might have accidentally left one of my supplementry essays blank, does this equal automatic rejection?
Thanks....

First, there is no such thing as an automatic rejection. All applicants will be reviewed no matter the circumstances.

Since the JHU essays are optional, not including one will not drastically impact how your application is reviewed.

Thank you so much! I was really worried... :D

Hmm, I only did the first supplemental one because my essay to the second would have been exactly the same as my common app one (since I talked about how my physics teacher changed my life through his course, which unfortunately already answers the question asked by the supplemental one). I guess it's no biggie though.

Hello AdmissionsDaniel,
I understand that as a transfer applicant I am not granted the opportunity to be interviewed. Choosing to get an interview is a great way for Freshman applicants to show the school they are interested in attending. As a transfer applicant, how can I show Admissions that JHU is my first choice school and I would very much like to attend? Thank you.
-Begum from a California Community College

First, the freshman interview has very little to do with the application review ... and those students who are interviewed do not have an advantage in the admissions process.

Second, transfer students though not able to interview are able to express their interest in Hopkins in their application. Either in their transfer application essay or in additional written supplement.

Do note though that I student's strong desire to attend is a very minimal factor in the review of transfer applicants.
