I got this e-mail from Tulane today:

"Tulane University sustained some damage as a result of Hurricane Katrina. While the damage is serious, all Tulane University students, faculty and staff are safe - a direct result of the quality of the Tulane emergency planning process that has been in place for several years.

While it will take several months for Tulane to make all necessary repairs and resume operations, we will restart admission outreach activities on Tuesday, September 6 in all areas except those directly affected by Hurricane Katrina. Unless you have received notice to the contrary, all events scheduled for your area will take place as scheduled.

All of us are concerned about conditions in New Orleans as our friends and neighbors struggle with the aftermath of this devastating storm. While many questions remain unanswered and the city faces a long road to recovery, we are absolutely certain of one answer - Tulane will continue to be one of the best institutions in America.

Thank you for your patience during this trying time. We will be sending more information to you as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Vice President for Enrollment Management

It doesnt say anything about the process itself, but I am guessing we can start sending our stuff in as soon as the server is back up. Its a good thing they conduct most of the admissions process online...

Thanks for posting that. That's interesting that the admissions folks are relocating to Richmond. Scott Cowen and his executive team have relocated to Houston. (I assume they're in the offices used by the MBA program locally.)

I don't like the sound of several months, but seeing the way it is now, it might be a year that they have to keep the school close.

I want to send in an early application (Nov. 1) for tulane but will not be able to have any communications with admission because I live in an area affected by the hurricane. My school is now functional and my guidence counselor suggested I fill out the application and send it in by the end of next week. I understand that the school is not underwater, but I obviously do not want the app to be lost. Our school has close ties to tulane and is reopening classes to enroll highschool students from NO. Would you suggest that I still send it in before November 1st or wait until I can get in touch with admissions and apply regular decision?

~ my thoughts and prayers are with all of those who have experienced this disaster ~

I also want to send in an early application... I'm going to wait until later this month before I send it in. I mean, it's not due until November, so there's no reason to send it in right now anyway. If you did, it would probably get lost in the mail.

From what Dr. Cowen has said, the damage to Tulane wasn't anything severe. The reason they're closing down for the rest of the semester is the situation in other parts of the city. I'm sure they'll be open for next school year, and quite possibly the spring semester of this year.
