2007 USNews Rankings (Leaked)

These supposed rankings appear every year prior to the actual release, don't put much hope in it.

rumor has it that the editor of newsweek is an UPenn alumnus

I agree with nottransferable...wait until the official rankings come out.

CC member Aurelius wondered why JHU is ranked below WashU in finanical resource if that's the case (I am assuming he/she is looking at the 2006 data) and below was my response:

Maybe JHU's number excludes the medical expenditure because its number is so enormous that if it's included, it's just way too obvious.

Actually, the discrepancy you are wondering about is due to JHU's partial affiliation with the APL (federal research) laboratory in Maryland. The lab is 45 minutes away from the JHU campus, but is technically considered part of the campus. However, it really has nothing to do with undergraduate or graduate education at JHU. JHU's medical research is considered part of its research spending, but the APL figures aren't always.

Bottom line is, if you see a list of research funding comparing different universities and JHU is way above everyone else at the top, it means the APL figures have been included. It's not really right to do that. Doing so would be kind of like arbitrarily including all of the Pentagon's research budget with the University of Texas.

It is precisely comments like the quote that are so troublesome. You will note that, unlike sound ranking scales (consumer reports for example), USNWR has NEVER said that a difference of a few places in the rankings is probably not meaningful. To the contrary, they sometimes feature a college that moved up slightly (and you can bet they get ad sales from those colleges, too!)

You are absolutely right. Sorry if I came across as a prestige slut, just meant to say that Brandeis knows how to play the game well. Good on them, as I have a strong interest in the school.

Nice move up for Penn. Life is gonna be harder next year.
