2008-2009 Classes Discussion

Our school runs on a seven-period schedule, so I am taking:
AP Psychology
AP English Lit
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
AP Spanish
AP U.S. History

I am self-studying AP US Government & Politics and AP Microeconomics.

This year, I took:
AP English Lang
AP Computer Science A
AP Macroeconomics
AP Chemistry

What grade are you heading to, collegebound?

in general, does it look bad if you take less AP/H than you did the previous year?
so for ie, i take 5 APs jr year. and only 4 APs sr.
will this look i'm regressing and 'not trying hard in senior year'?

Is there a particular reason you're doing this, sushi?

well. cos it's senior year and naturally, I just want to 'slow down' a bit.
and also, i don't have room in my schedule (this is my biggest problem)!
our school REQUIRES fine arts, so that takes up one of my periods.. and also, i'm in yearbook, which is another period (i can't give up yearbook cos next year will be my 3rd year). This leaves me with only 4 open periods of academic classes.

Is AP Environmental Science useful?

I'm kind of wimping out of AP Physics, so I'm considering some other classes: AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP Computer Science A, and AP Statistics..

I don't really know what AP Environmental Science is good for.. and I don't want to take AP Psychology because everyone takes it, but I'm interested in counseling and therapy. I might go into engineering, so AP Computer Science could be a useful head start on Java.. AP Stats.. I'm kind of interested in business (management), but I'm already signed up for AP Calculus, so it'll be my second math class..

This year I took:
Trig/Math Analysis
AP English Language
US History/Geography CP
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
Korean IV H

My other classes are going to be:
AP English Literature
Civics/Econ CP
Physics CP
(elective)
AP Calculus AB
TA or something or another AP class if I feel like it..

What do you guys think? Which one should I pick? I'm leaning towards Environmental Science..

samba, I don't think most decent colleges accept credit for AP ES. I remember looking at the review book for it (Barrons, I think) in the 7TH GRADE and I could confidently answer a good number of the questions.

My Classes (Junior Year):
AP Biology
Hon Eng 11 (our school doesn't offer the AP class ...grr)
French V*
Advanced Art*
AP U.S. Hist
AP Calc BC (took AB this year)

*these are just 1 year below the AP classes .. meaning I'm taking the AP class for them in my senior year

samba, most colleges don't accept credit for APES but if it's something you're interested in then take it (I am...although now I'm realizing it is kind of considered a cop-out class...but I will take AP Physics senior year...maybe)! I wouldn't recommend stats...it's pretty easy but you already have calc. Unless you really want to go into math, leave it at Calac and take APES or Comp Sci.

sushifreak, I don't know if this happens at your school but sometimes you can count another elective as a fine arts. For me to graduate, I have to have 2 years of a foreign language. I took three years so my extra year of foreign language counted as my fine arts credit (too bad I found this out AFTER I took Orchestra to count for fine arts.)

Final schedule for junior year (next year):

-Reg Eng 11
-Honors Trig
-AP Chem
-AP Econ/AP Gov
-Honors Physics
-Intern at hospital

hoping to appy to BS/MD programs in future. Any advice or 'heads up' for me?
My concern is language. I took Spansih 1 in 8th grade and currently i have Spanish 3. i am not taking a language next year....should this be a concern?

I don't think that not taking a 4th year of Spanish would hold you back. I'm just like you- took Sapnish I in the 8th grade and was considering taking my 4th year of Spanish next year. i decided not to take it 1) because I'm not that good at it and have no real interest in it and 2) because I wanted to take AP Psych instead. I know that HPYS and the like recommend that you take four years of a language but that doesn't mean that you have to. How about you try this. Take what you like and stop worrying so much about what will get you in where. I'm sure they would appreciate seeing a student who did their own thing more than someone who just did what the admissions officers would want.

Here2succeed: yes of course. I sometimes come off as worrying too much on this forum, but yeah in reality i am following my own path.

heretosucceed, haha thanks. but no, our school is pretty 'strict' about fine arts. For ie, Yearbook isn't considered a fine arts. YEARBOOK! thats like.. hardcore design & computer stuff. oh well.

paki: i'm not taking a 4th year of spanish either. I was never good at it, and I have no room in your schedule. You should be fine. If you're worried, you can explain why you decided not to take it on your app.

thanks guys, but i think im going to stick with ap environmental science. just cus. im interested in it.

My terrible school made me change my schedule again. =/ Man I hope Ivies don't think this schedule is too weak. It's the hardest I could make it w/ band.

Band 4
"School Service" (basically a study hall, I'm gonna study AP Chem during this time. I was supposed to take AP Chem during this period, but they dropped it)
AP Calc
Spanish 3 (no honors)
AP Lit
AP Bio
Online: APUSH

Will be a junior

AP Chem
AP Calc AB
Theo/PE
H English 11
AP US History
H Physics
H Spanish 3

I go to a catholic hs, so my choices are somewhat limited. This is pretty much the toughest schedule that you can take for junior year (i don't qualify for AP Spanish 4, nor do i want to). It shouldn't even be too bad, except APUSH :(. Most of the classes at my school are a joke. Only problem is the time crunch from play and musical practice.

Self Study

AP Micro
AP Macro
AP ES

How much work do you think I would need to spend per week on work in:
AP Cal BC
AP Computer Science AB
AP Physics B
All of which would be online?

I'm a rising sophomore at a school where 4 courses per semester is the norm. I took APAH Freshman year and made a 94 (One of the Higher grades in the class) I also made a 99 in Honors Pre-cal if that helps.

I'm worried about the work load. I only have 5 hours of instructional time each day at school... so I'll have to work more at home.

Please tell me your thoughts on the following courseload as a whole:

1st Semester
AP Cal BC
AP Computer Science AB
AP Physics B
Elementary Spanish I @ CC
Honors English II

2nd Semester
AP Cal BC
AP Computer Science AB
AP Physics B
Elementary Spanish II @ CC
Honors Chemistry
General Biology I @ CC

Self-study:
AP Psych
AP Stats

Your workload won't be too awful, this coming from someone who took AP Calc and all honors, pre-IB classes (chem, physics, english, history, spanish)
I'm also going to be a junior next year, and I'm slightly afraid of taking all IB classes.
My courseload:
IB Math HL
IB Chemistry
IB Biology
IB Physics
IB Spanish
IB History
IB English
TOK first semester and Spanish Culture second semester

Survivable?

AP Spanish Lang.
AP US History
AP Calc AB
AP English Lang.
AP Enviro Sci.

Possibly self-studying Human Geo.

+2 undetermined classes @ CC.

... for junior year. Is this enough? o.o

^
You've got to be kidding me... Think about it for a sec. Think about what other things you have to prepare for... Then you'll see if that's enough...

lol yeah. what thatoneStudent said.
Remember, you shouldn't be studying 24/7. Sports, volunteering, etc.
plus, SATs.
