As to them owing her double-time…funny you should say that ;). Without going into detail, Yale is off to the “good” this time as much as they were off to the “bad” last time on the EFC (based on my own calculations). For the un-initiated, my D was accepted to Yale UG the year before the “middle-class initiatives” were installed. She chose to go elsewhere.

For the record, Yale is still a good bit more expensive than UT-SW and the difference between the two after all is said and done is all on her (extra un-subsidized loans) as the parental contribution will not change.

So Big Daddy where are you leaning?? SHhhhhhh…she won’t hear you!!

You might have a new kitty for your house!! And she could get a baby pool instead of that fancy-schmancy “garden” tub! Not that I have a leaning…

I would think their FA package would remain relatively the same unless you go off and win the Lotto. Is there a significant difference in the 2 packages?

Is she still more research…that is why she was wanting Yale? Crazy boy says he(we) grow more, and push more when we are outside our comfort zones. Maybe that’s why he has learned to wear pants and shoes instead of flojos and board shorts!

Besides creature comforts and familarity vs. new and different what is her heart telling her?

kat, she says she wants to go to Yale. But she says she wants the lifestyle/comforts she’d have at Southwestern with the extra $ for living expenses (Yale’s budget is unrealistically tight). People in Hell want ice water. So what the devil do we do? lol

Maybe we shouldn’t have switched babies at the hospital with those good parents. But it’s been fun having her raise us. ;)

I just want her to be happy. She is a good kid who has done all she can to put herself in this great position of deciding between such wonderful choices. Wherever she chooses is just fine with me.

When she started this process she had no idea that she would even get into UT-SW, much less receive a scholarship. And Yale wasn’t much more than wishful thinking.

And yeah. She still has some version of academic medicine in her future. Still plans on taking 5 years. What field? She has no idea. Somewhere between oncology, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery. Today. Next Tuesday? Who knows?

Cur - I didn’t realize that the “middle-class initiative” extended into med school. From what another poster has said on this board, it doesn’t seem like Harvard has kept up with Yale in the medical school financial aid arena.

Well, they didn’t eliminate mine…my tax return is just a bit complicated…but I ain’t complaining. Assets killed me as usual but…again, I ain’t complaining. At least they didn’t count motorcycles. ;)

“HMS Dean Jeffrey Flier remains committed to taking steps to reduce the cost of a four-year medical education. Parents with incomes of $120,000 or less with assets typical for those income levels are no longer expected to contribute to the cost of their children attending HMS. In addition, this initiative eliminates from the family income calculation typical before-tax retirement savings.”

Measely but still higher than the 100k mentioned for Yale and lower than the 180 k for undergraduate.

I don’t understand why these schools still charge tuition at all. It’s really rather outrageous considering the size of their endowments. Congress has been hinting that these schools might lose tax-exempt status if they keep making money at the rates at which they’re making it.

Congress has also been hinting that they will force cable companies to offer channels “a la carte.” These are two things I really really want them to do.

Well, the “impartial election observer” has reported to me that the “which med school” returns are almost all counted. Heck, she may not even use her whole 4 days. ;)

Conversation with D : "While you are finalizing your decision, I want to be sure you understand that there will be compromises in lifestyle you may well have to make attending Yale (cat, roommate, car, spending cash, trips). “Dad. I got it. Sheesh. I’m not a moron”.
