2010-2011 Med school applicants and their parents

Yeah, ba-byyyyyyy!!! Woo-hoo!!! You did good!!

WOWMom (I like that!). Y’all are next. Sending some of those psychic first acceptance vibes Kristin doesn’t need anymore to your boy.

Girl. Girl. Girl. And her BF. Jeebus. Lost my mind for a sec. Kid was stranded in Philly but just now got on the last plane out. I wasn’t thinking straight.

Congratulations Kristen! How big is that grin on your face right now?

Glad mudgette got out of Philly (two ll’s) :)

It is huge. I am still in shock.

Things I’m doing tomorrow: getting a Mizzou Med sweatshirt, turning in my deposit to the admissions director (who told me the other day that I should expect some great news just in time for the holidays, and that they’d love to see me here), and taking a tour with a new set of eyes.

Absolutely can’t wait!

Congrats, Kristin! Yep, great news just in time for the holidays!

Congrats kristin!!! Awesomeness and great job!! The first thing I did was to order a sweatshirt from my acceptance as well! It is certainly a great present prior to the holidays. Sweet.

Wonderful news Kristin! What a great holiday present for you.

Congrats Kristin!!!

Thanks thanks thanks! Still hasn’t sunk in but feels incredible nonetheless! Hope your kiddos get to feel similarly awesome feelings and enjoy some success after lots of hard work :)

Outstanding news, K. You are going to be a doctor! And you have in state fees.

Now it will all come down to fit & finances. Will one of the other places offer a fit that is enough better to pay more or will they offer you enough aid to make it work for you. I am sure you will have some interesting choices.

^The difference in price between IS, OOS and private might be insignificant in a big picture. You have to look closer though, as I have noticed that price at IS schools in our state normally jumps in 3rd and 4th year. So, the total price difference for my D’s state school and private school is only about $15,000 over 4 years. She has not decided yet, but I told her not to consider $$$ in her decision making. Another thing is that living expenses could be also significantly different from place to place over 4 years.

And you think that ** wasn’t** deliberate? <wink></wink>

WOWmom, LOL!

Kristin…I’m new to the Pre-med forum, but I wanted to send my congrats! I can’t imagine what a relief it is to get that first med-school acceptance!

You’re going to med school! :)

Are you instate for Mizzou? Can I ask what undergrad you attended/are attending?

Their 10/90 MCAT split is 28-35 and their 10/90 GPA split is 3.4-4.0

Dumb question…what exactly does this mean? I’m guessing, but not sure of my assumptions.

remember that MCAT scores for females are more than a full point below males.

Why is this?

what is the average MCAT for - say - White males? Asian males? etc?

*This seems to be the norm for U Chicago. I know of a couple of people this year that got shot down within hours of sending their fee, and all this from midnite to 5 AM. Makes you wonder… *

hmmmm… a rejection that happens in the middle of night just after sending money when it’s obvious that no human looked at the secondaries?

Do the secondaries have “objective” info that a computer could sort thru, or do secondaries have subjective info that a human would have to read/decipher?

If it’s the latter, then why not challenge the charge on your VISA bill? How could the school justify to VISA (which is who they’d have to justify) charging money for a service that they never rendered? And they could never prove that they rendered to any reasonably thinking person.

Of course if the info on the secondaries is objective info that a computer could sort thru, then no issue.

Hi mom2,

Yes I’m in state, and I go to Mizzou for undergrad. I think I have a strong candidacy for med school in general, and for Mizzou in particular, so I’m thrilled it worked out. As you imagine, it feels great.

10/90 split is the range of scores for the 10th percentile of their applicants to the 90th percentile of their applicants as reported by the AAMC (and found in the MSAR). I used this range to determine how well my scores (30S/3.8) compared to applicants for those schools and per Mike’s suggestion didn’t apply to many schools where I was more than a point outside their split–which has worked remarkably well for me.

No idea why MCAT scores vary, but they indeed do, and if you use US News & World Report numbers, you can see overall average score, female average score, minority average score, and another one that I can’t remember. A subscription to their site for that info costs $20. PM me for more details.

Secondaries are generally essays to write about a prompt that must fall within certain character limits (and I thought word limits were bad!)–so that part of the secondary is subjective I’m assuming. Most schools don’t screen for secondaries (and why would they–if they can send anyone that applies a secondary and charge applicants $75+ to look at it, I bet I’d do it too), so there’s the possibility that the schools that reject really early are actually rejecting based on scores or something objective (like you suspected), not the substance of the secondary’s essays. Would be sweet if you could contest those charges!!!

And to the rest of the crowd, hope you’re having a great winter and very happy holidays–I know mine were just sweetened by a 4.0 this semester :)

Kristin…thanks for the info…I thought the split might be like the 25/75 for undergrad, but wanted to be sure. :)

Congrats on getting a 4.0 this semester! Do you have to send your new transcript out to schools that you’re still waiting to hear from?

Gee. And Golly. I am becoming completely superfluous around here. And I like it. A lot. Good job, cc pro’s.

kristin, you have listened very well to our pro’s advice (even though sometimes it seemed harsh?) and have adapted/modified what you learned to your own specific wants and needs and profile. That is really the take-home point here, IMO.

awwwww thanks Curm. If I didn’t do those things (ie, listen/adapt/modify) what would be the point of being here? I had (and still have!) tons to learn, happy I could find a reliable source of info from your aptly named CC Pros.

PS: mom2, I’ll send final transcripts to the school I finally decide to go to. GPA means nothing but Latin honors to me anymore, and, oh big bummer for me, I’m stuck in the magna cum laude GPA range (LOTS of sarcasm there)
