St. Georges over Groton? Really? How so

Lvillegrad - I’ve thought a lot about the careful and interesting matriculation stats you and your son prepared. I’ve also watched you regularly post disclaimers stating that “there are many other relevant criteria when selecting a school.” Unfortunately, we Americans are obsessed with “Best Of” designations and stats are more important to the typical CC Prep Schoolers and their parents than unquantifiable differences.

It would be an interesting study to examine the decision process of 20 families whose children were academically advanced and emotionally secure, but who knew nothing about boarding schools, make decisions based only on interviews, visits, revisits, talking to alumni etc. I wonder if their choices would reflect the spread of your Best Of list. Perhaps, but perhaps not.

St. Georges and Lawrenceville? Nah…! I’d bump them both for Groton and Thacher. :)

Lawrenceville has better matriculation stats than Thacher. L’ville is celebrating it’s 200th anniversary this year. It is closer to NYC. On top of it all, it is in NJ.

Lawrenceville does have a lot of ups on Thacher, as pulsar pointed out. And Blueraven, don’t get me wrong, I think Groton is a great school, but St. Georges is hard to beat.

Yes, L’ville has some ups on Thacher, but being in NJ ain’t one of 'em.

what does being closer to nyc have to do with anything? thacher’s closer to LA… it’s probably closer to beijing, too, if you want to go there…

ps: i’d rather be in california than in NJ… but that might just be me. ; )

Groton: Average Percentile SSAT 90%, Endowment Size $224 million , Average SAT Score 2080 and acoording to Lvillegrades College matriculation list consistently places in the top 3 or 4 after PA, PEA and SPS for Ivy and top school placement.

St. Georges: Average SAT Score 1900, Endowment Size $115 million, Average Percentile SSAT 81%. Don’t know how they rank matric wise.

all stats are from Boarding School Review

I know I’m vehnemently defending Groton but I feel it gets slighted on this board quite a bit.

blueraven, no one is saying Groton is a bad school. Even though it may not get the attention the HADES get, that doesn’t make it not as good. It is a good school, and good luck there next year!

Hahaha thank you I’m sorry it’s just annoying me that people keep calling it 2nd tier. I guess I feel a little slighted seeing as I was accepted to HADES as well and Groton had just as low acceptance rates.

Wow, sorry blueraven for my ignorance. It appears Groton deserves to be in the top 10 and probably the top 5. I have a very limited inteliigence regarding prep schools.

yes st.georges used to be a very elite school but has fallen upon hard times
also you put RL in your list which is a day school not a boarding school
also i am biased but how is milton any better than MX

I was just refering to prep schools, not just boarding schools.

No problem but you can see why I get a little upset when people start debating whether or not it’s ‘2nd tier’ and it consistently gets overlooked in favor of schools who statistically speaking are nowhere near Groton. :)

^ haha, yeah. i adore loomis, but… it’s ridiculous to classify groton and loomis in the same “tier”, because they’re really nothing alike…

The percentages may be skewed when comparing a smaller school with a larger school. Many NYC prep schools like collegiate trump HADES when you look at ivy placement % etc.

I don’t get what you’re saying about size skewing percent? Groton is a really small school and does fine… THe whole point of percents is that they aren’t effected by size right? Mabye they just didn’t include Ny day schools?

if you include RL than you have to include Horace mann, Harvard-westlake, collegiate, brearley all of which would completely mess up that ranking because their Ivy matriculation are all rival to if in some cases better than HADES

no, i think pulsar means that the smaller the school, the more advantageous. i can see why… more individualized attention, especially if you’re struggling, maybe you’d know your counselor/teachers better, since it’s a small school, close knit, etc = better recs, and so forth

@ HCOS: it’s pretty hard to beat brearley’s matriculation, haha…
