I'm sure there are threads from past years about college graduation gift ideas, but times do change...and I'd love to hear from others. I'll start.

We have some jewelry we inherited from my mother when she died. Coincidentally the jewels are rubies (DD's school color is red) and diamonds. We are giving DD the design of a piece of jewelry using Grandma's jewels. We are paying for the design, "metal" (think gold)...and she is thrilled about this. We actually asked her if this was something she would like. We happen to know a jewelry designer so this all will happen this summer.

They have HAD their graduation gift - 4 years of a college education! Well, we did pay to frame DD’s huge diploma. Here’s hoping DS chooses the smaller-sized option next year…

For both of mine, they knew/know the gift is whatever is left in the college acct. upon graduation. For son it was ~$10,000. D’s next year looks like it will be ~ $15,000.

Oh college? I got given one of these many moons ago: [College Chairs, Captain’s Chair, Commemorative Chairs , Alumni Chairs, Award Chair, Standard Chair of Gardner](http://www.collegechair.com/) - sitting on it now!

We just have a high school graduate this year but told him that he would get a new car upon college graduation since he is taking the full ride option. We figure it’s a small price to pay relative to the cost of paying for his education.

mathmom, I asked my kids about the chairs (and frames and class rings and the other “stuff” being hocked by the school). BOTH said…NO THANK YOU.

I figure we should get them something they can use or want.

When DS got his Bachelors in Music, we gave him money towards the purchase of an additional instrument…in fact that was what EVERYONE gave him…money towards that instrument. He has it, uses it every day…and was thrilled to get it.

Last May we gave S a (less than $100) Citizen titanium watch with his school’s name and the year engraved on the back. He likes it and wears it all the time. We paid to have his big diploma matted and framed ($135).

We also gave him the remains of his college fund and signed over the 9 yr. old truck to him that he had been driving for three years (bought with $ from his college fund).

D got a combination Bday, Xmas and grad gift of a digital slr and lots of accessories. We are also going to take a trip together - probably Alaska. I really did not pay for her college ed. Mostly scholarships, summer interships and a small amount of loans . she has earned something nice
