2010 Commencement Speakers

SUNY- Oneonta: Astronaut Ronald Garan Jr. (Oneonta class of '82)

I heard Jeffrey Immelt speak today at BC’s graduation. I was expecting a long, boring speech, but he was pretty good. He told the graduates that he was a good choice due to the fact that Alec Baldwin played him on tv. I was surprised that Sen. Scott Brown was not the speaker, but then remembered his daughter graduated today, so I am sure he wanted to be just a dad. He is speaking Friday at BC Law graduation.

Lisa Kudrow was just a terrific speaker at Vassar’s graduation. Her speech was about her life story after graduating Vassar … how one door closes and another door opens. Who knew that she was a biology major and published in a science research journal, having never taking one acting class in school? Merryl Streep (Vassar alum and trustee) was on stage too with the Board, but did not speak.

Mount Holyoke College (the US’s oldest women’s college):

New York Times columnist Gail Collins, the first woman ever to head the Times’ editorial page.

Clemson - James Clyburn (an african-american representative in SC)

Hampshire College - Peter Cole, a poet and literature translator, and alum. He gave a very thought-provoking speech on ‘radical convention’, replete with poetry references.

Brandeis-Michael Oren, Israeli ambassador to the US spoke, and honorary degree recipient Paul Simon sang “The Boxer”, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.

^^Paul Simon: Awesome!
